Signal Culture is a live-in artists residency program for artists, researchers, and tool makers in the field of experimental new media art in Owego, New York. It was founded in 2012 by Jason Bernagozzi, Debora Bernagozzi, and Hank Rudolph with the philosophy that media tools from any era have their own unique language worth exploring. Signal Culture has received support from the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation[1], mediaThe Foundation, Wave Farm, and the New York State Council on the Arts.
The artist studio has real-time analog and digital image processing equipment, synthesizers, custom-made hardware and software, a variety of interactive interfaces, and alternative imaging devices in a modular format; in total, it has over 300 items. [2]
Signal Culture Cookbook
In August 2014, Signal Culture published the Signal Culture Cookbook, which features a collection of techniques from artists working in the field of new media arts. Articles include real-time glitch video processing, databending, direct laser animation on film, transforming your drawing into a fake computer, Wi-Fi mapping, alternative uses for piezo mics, visualizing earthquakes in real time, and using swarm algorithms to compose new musical structures.[3]
