Sikar Goverment Museum or State Museum Sikar is located in the historically rich town of Sikar, in the Indian state of Rajasthan.[1] It was established by the Department of Archeology and Museums, Rajsthan on 28th June, 2006 and the building housing it was built by the Public Works Department (PWD), Jaipur. [2] The purpose of the museum was to collect and preserve the art of the Shekawati region of Rajasthan, so as to preserve this great heritage for future generations.[2][3]

Sikar Government Museum houses a total collection of 1,869 historical artifacts encompassing mostly Shekawati region. The primary objective of this museum was to store sculptures dating back to 10th century. Belonging to the Harshnath temple , which is situated near Sikar on a nearby hill these sculptures are still stored in Government Museum.[2]

Historical Collections

The museum is divided into 8 different exhibitions each capturing a unique aspect of the region's history and legacy. The 8 different sections are - Inscriptions , Stone pratima ( i.e stone carvings) , weaponry, coins, Miniatures, excavated materials, folk life and Gallery. [1]Among the various historical objects on display in Government Museum are 2 inscriptions, 287 stone sculptures, 51 weapons, 17 metallic images, 1256 coins, 51 paintings and 205 traditional art and craft objects.[2]

Inscriptions

Government Museum , houses a good collection of historical Inscriptions from the Shekawati region including inscription by Harsh samvat found from Khandala, inscription by Vikram Samvat dating back to 1030 found from Harsh Village, inscription by Vikram Samvat found in Sikar and inscription found near Rewasa of Chandeli .[1]

Stone Pratimma

Government Museum, Sikar also has a big collection of historically important stone carvings and statues and sculptures. Among these are sculptures such as Vakund Vishnu, Hrihrpitamahmartnd, Asnsth Shiva, Udhrhwarts Shiva, dancing Shiva, Lakshmi , Brhyji, Ganesh, Dasthsta Maheshwari, Bhairavi, Ambika, Indrani, the Chamunda, Brhyni, Lilia, Mademoiselle, Ashvthoma slaughter of Bhima, Sun son Renwat, station Vishnu, Nvgrih panel and Ashtdigpal Indra among various other great pieces. Apart from the stone sculptures collected in the museum, the metal sculptures found from Gaurau village, Nagaur are noteworthy , including the statues of Rishabdev. Most of these sculptures belong to 9th-11th Centuries.[1]

Weaponry

Government Museum has many different kinds of antique and historical weaponry dating back to the Rajputana that used to rule Shekawati region. Among these weapons include hand-to-hand combat weapons like Swords, transitional weapons such as Tega, Knda, Sekla, Nimacha, Una , Sudet and Katta etc. Todaedar, Ptthrkla hooded and Kartusi etc. Also on display are armours and shields in addition to Spears and Bayonets. Excavated Materials

Many excavation discoveries which have been unearthed in nearby areas and around Rajasthan are also stored and displayed in Sikar. The various excavated stuffs artifacts include pottery found near Ganeshwar , which are both ornamental and plain in nature. These pots are long and narrow mouthed. Many cups of varying sizes have also been found. Excavations have also resulted in the discovery of other daily use items such as copper knives, fishing hooks, bangles and other jewelry. Stone and terracotta beads, playing pieces, bone tools, toy cart wheels, panels with auspicious Buddhist symbols, iron axes, etc. have been displayed in this section. These objects date back to 2000-2500 BB.C.

Coins

Many ancient coins belonging to various kingdoms and past civilizations have also been dug here. Among the various clubs that have been displayed are Kushan period coins obtained from Kuradhan (Neem station), Dada, Fatehpura (Khetdi, Jhunjhunu),Indo-Sasanian coins from Dhamava ( Churu ), Adivaraha coins from Galer (Rajgarh Churu) and Ganedi (Sikar), Ladusar (Sikar) , Equestrian and Vrishabha type coins obtained from Ganedi and Galler, Sultanate period coins obtained from Harsha, Jhunjhunu, Katrathal (Sikar), Rohi of Vilanga (Sujangarh, Churu) and Khagipavada (Sujangarh Churu) coins of Jaunpur Sultan, Bhadesar ( Mughal era coins obtained from Sardarshahr, Churu) and princely coins obtained from Sarai (Udaipurwati, Jhunjhunu). Many of these coins are made from hammered silver and other precious and semi precious materials. Adivaraha type coins of 9th century AD have been found from Ganedi. The weight of these silver coins is about 3.56 grams . Mughal era silver coins have been found from Bhadesar . A silver coin weighing 11.37 grams has been found from Sarai . A coin of Sawai Pratap Singh, the ruler of Jaipur, has also been found from here.
