Sikhism in Myanmar

Introduction

Sikhism is a minority religion in Myanmar and there are about 50 Gurdwaras in the country. The Sikh population today in Myanmar stands at 2,000 to 3,000. The first Sikhs arrived in Burma, as it was known back then, in 1898 while working as soldiers for the British Empire.[1] In July 2015 the Sikhs in Myanmar founded the Myanmar Young Sikh Aid to provide emergency aid for natural disasters. By December 2019 Sikhs began a motorcycle club known as Myanmar Sikh Motorcycle Club to celebrate religious festivals and to promote the Punjabi language. With the efforts of the Sikh youth in Myanmar, they launched a group called the Mandalay Sikh Youths, to teach the Sikh youngsters about their faith. [2] Today Sikhs in Myanmar run businesses, mostly automotive, and a small percentage are doing farming.[3]
