Early life[edit]

Cheng was born in Tokyo, Japan to parents of Chinese descent.[2] The family moved to Ottawa, Canada when she was an infant. At age 4, while on a road trip across Atlantic Canada, she discovered music while playing on a blue, plastic toy keyboard.[2] During middle school at Broadview Avenue Public School, she played flute and keyboard in jazz band. In high school at Lisgar Collegiate Institute, Cheng played viola in the orchestra and keyboard in the senior jazz band.[3]

Education[edit]

After graduating from Lisgar Collegiate Institute in 2009, Cheng moved to New York City to study at the Manhattan School of Music.[2] While obtaining both her Bachelor's of Music and Master of Music degrees in Piano Performance there in the studio of Jeffrey Cohen,[2] she was recognized as a Presidential Award Scholar, Dean’s List student, and the recipient of the Roy M. Rubinstein Award for "exceptional promise in piano performance".[4] She also received an Associate Piano Performance Diploma (ARCT) from the Royal Conservatory of Toronto.[5] She has performed in masterclasses for renowned pianists Boris Berman, Christoph Eschenbach, Peter Frankl, Wu Han, Angela Hewitt, Gilbert Kalish, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Anton Kuerti, André Laplante, Louis Lortie, Robert McDonald, Menahem Pressler, Jacques Rouvier, and Nelita True.

Career highlights[edit]

Cheng has performed as both a solo recitalist and collaborative pianist internationally, including at such distinguished venues as Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall five times; New York's Steinway Hall, Merkin Hall,[6] National Arts Club; Canada's Parliament Hill, Rideau Hall, Supreme Court of Canada, National Arts Centre, Winspear Centre,[7] Canadian Museum of History,[8] National Gallery of Canada;[9] Shanghai's Poly Grand Theatre; Holland's Remonstrantse Kerk, and the official residence of Canada’s Ambassador to the European Union in Belgium.[10] Recent highlights include a 13-city recital tour throughout China, a 10-city tour across Atlantic Canada with Debut Atlantic,[11] and a month-long tour in Ontario and Quebec with Jeunesses Musicales Canada.[12]

Cheng made her orchestral debut in 2008, playing Schumann's Piano Concerto in Ottawa's Centrepointe Theatre.[3] In subsequent years, she won top prizes at the Thousand Islands International Piano Competition,[13] the Heida Hermanns International Piano Competition, the Canadian Music Competition National Finals, and the Lillian Fuchs Chamber Music Competition. She has been featured at international music festivals including Festival of the Sound (Ontario), Ottawa Chamberfest (Ontario), Trasimeno (Italy),[14] Aspen (Colorado), CAMMAC (Quebec),[15] and Pontiac Enchanté (Quebec).[16]

Cheng² Duo[edit]

Cheng is the pianist of the Canadian ensemble Cheng² Duo, alongside her cellist brother, Bryan Cheng. Named one of CBC Music's 2015 “30 hot Canadian classical musicians under 30”, the duo has performed throughout North America, Europe (Belgium, Germany, Italy, the Czech Republic, Holland), and Asia (China and South Korea), and has been featured extensively on CBC Radio Two, as well as Vermont Public Radio, ICI Musique,[17] Radio-Canada International,[18] WCRB Classical Music Boston,[19] WCNY Classic FM, Winnipeg Classic FM,[20] and Kulturradio RBB Germany. Cheng² Duo released its debut album, Violoncelle français, in October 2016 on the German classical label, Audite Musikproduktion, which received critical acclaim in international press and publications in France,[21] Luxembourg,[22] Germany,[23] the Netherlands,[24] Canada,[25] and USA[26] for its “musical sensitivity”, “maturity and perfection”, “taste, sure flair for phrasing, and beauty of sound”.[23] The duo released its sophomore album with Audite, Violonchelo del fuego, in June 2018.[27] The duo is represented by Agence Station Bleue in North America.[28]

Teaching-artist initiatives[edit]

During her graduate studies at the Manhattan School of Music, Cheng was hired as a teaching-artist in the Distance Learning Program.[4] Launched in 1996, the program (the first of its kind at a major conservatory) uses "state-of-the-art interactive videoconference technology to offer master classes, private instruction, and seminars for music students and educators around the globe; standards-based classical and jazz programs for K-12; and a variety of selections for lifelong learners".[29]

Since 2015, Cheng has also been a teaching-artist of Bridge Arts Ensemble[30][31], an organization that brings music to over 50 school districts in New York's Adirondack Park Region and impacts 50,000+ students annually.[32]

Charity work[edit]

Since 2008, Cheng has curated and performed at numerous benefit concerts, raising tens of thousands of dollars for various charities, including The Ottawa Hospital Foundation's 20/20 Campaign and the United Way.[33][34] As a member of By Youth, For Youth [35], she has also organized and participated in relief efforts for natural-disaster victims in Haiti, Indonesia, China, and Japan through the Canadian Red Cross.[36][37][38]
