The Simeon Stylites Monastery (Romanian: Mănăstirea Sfântul Simion Stâlpnicul) is a Romanian Orthodox monastery in Arad, located in the Gai neighborhood, Romania.

History

Was built between 1760 and 1762 by Bishop Sinesie Jivanović (1751-1768) with the help of the Arad craftsman Egidius Ioanovici. The complex, which includes the bishop's residence, a church and outbuildings, was built in the Baroque style; the ensemble was enriched by bringing the wooden church from Seliște. It is a monument of Romanian architecture on the Mureș Valley from the 18th century.

Description

The whole architectural complex follows a U-shaped form; it has a richly ornamented east facade, with a pyramidal roof; inside the division is characteristic of Orthodox churches. The altar houses the remains of the bishops of Arad.

In the southern part of the mansion-church was moved in 1986, from the hill of the cemetery from Seliște, the wooden church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul.

The monastery is dedicated to Saint Simeon the Pillar (390-459) also called the Elder to be different from Simeon the Young Pillar (or Simeon from the Wonderful Mountain, 521–592).
