Sina Bathaie (SNɒː BæT hɒː Persian سینا بطحایی ) is an Iranian-Canadian multi-instrumentalist, producer and film score composer, mostly known for his contemporary style of playing santur and his fusion music.[1][2]. His album Ray of Hope was nominated for the Best Word Beat Album of the Year in 16th annual Independent Music Awards in New York City in 2018.[3] [4][5] The WholeNote Magazine referred to him as "one of Toronto's Best kept Secrets".[2]

Early Life[edit]

Sina was born into a musician family; his father Javad Bathaie is a santur maestro in Iran. He began playing at the age of seven and studied Persian classical repertoire (Radif) on the instrument Oud with Mohammad Firouzi. He later studied Composition and Orchestration for Films and TV at Berklee College of Music.[6][7]

Career[edit]

Bathaie received a warm recognition in the Canadian music scene after immigrating to Canada in 2009. He released his first album Sound of Silence in 2012 and had performance and appearance in international music conferences such as Pacific Contact (2019),[8] CINARS (2018), [9] Folk Music Ontario (2018) [10] [11] Mundial Montreal (2015) [12] [13] and Global Toronto (2018) [14]. His music has been featured at Aga Khan Museum Light Up the Dark 3D video spectacular [15] [16] and he has been featured at festivals such as Luminato[17][18] Prismatic Festival,[19][20] Fete de la Musique Mont Tremblant,[21] TD Niagara Jazz Festival [22] [23], Aga Khan Museum [24] [25], Small World Music [26] as well as TV appearances on CP24 [27] and featured performance on CBC Radio's Metro Morning and Big City Small World.[28]

Sina developed his own style of music by incorporating Eastern melodies along with Western instrumentation and achieved a unique sound in world fusion music with his ensemble that includes cello, guitar, bass, percussion, drum and santur.[1] He released his second album Ray of Hope on Windcatcher Records in 2017 , The album was nominated for Best World Beat Album of the Year in 16th annual Independent Music Award in NYC. [5][3]

Bathaie also scored movies such as   Un royaume déménage, Ameno and Mr Settled Immigrant. [29]

Bathaie's second album Ray of Hope was nominated for the Best Word Beat Album of the Year in 16th annual Independent Music Awards in New York City in 2018.[3]

His single "Summerdaze" was also nominated for Independent Music Award for Best Song - Dance or Electronica in 2019. [4][30]
