Rubin B. Singleton III, known professionally as SINGLTN, is an American R&B singer, songwriter, model, and founder of the label RB4 Entertainment[1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. He is most commonly known for his hit singles “Skin” and “Congratulations” released in 2020[1][3][7][8][6].
Early life and education[edit]
Singleton is born and raised with his older sister in Brunswick, Georgia in a family of musicians.[2][4][7]. Singleton had a special relationship with his military father who helped him be more disciplined in his career pursuit and become a better musician[2][4][6]. At a younger age, he was also singing with his family in a church and joined choirs at high school and college[1][4][6][9]. During his school years, his dream was to move to New York City or Los Angeles where he would have the opportunity to become a professional singer. For this reason, he prioritized refining his vocal abilities by hiring private teachers and furthering his musical education[1]. He later graduated from Savannah State University where he obtained a degree in Vocal Performance[1][4][6][9]
Career[edit]
At the age of five, Singleton performed his solo in a church where he was recognized for his talent for a first time and began writing his first songs[1][4][6]. During his younger years, he joined an ensamble in New York and he was working as a model simultaneously[2]. As a part of his modelling career, Singleton was portrayed by the famous American portrait painter Kehinde Wiley in 2008 in three of his oil paintings debuted in Wiley’s solo exhibition “The World Stage: Africa, Lagos ~ Dakar” in New York[1][2][10][11][12][13]. While being in New York, Singleton started shaping his public image as a professional performer by serving as a background vocalist of Josh Groban, Alicia Keys, John Mayer, and Jennifer Hudson which he described as "a key pivot point" in his career[1][2][4][6][14][15][7][8][16][9][17]. He appeared with Josh Groban on live performances for The Late Show with David Letterman, Good Morning America, and Live! with Regis and Kelly, and accompanied Alicia Keys and John Mayer on the song “No One” at the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut[2][4].
During his work on an off-broadway play in New York, Singleton was noticed by Beyoncé’s choreographer and was invited to an audition. Eventually, he was selected as a background vocalist, however, she later decided to switch it up and go with her all-girl band. Yet, he got invited to be one of the male pharaohs who were taking part in the stage performance during Beyoncé's “Ladies First Tour”.[1][2][4][6][14][9][7][8][17]
In 2019, Singleton was approached by several investment opportunities that helped him continue his career as an independent recording artist and launch his label RB4 Entertainment[1][4][6][9][16][17]. On November 22, 2019 he released a cover of the famous ballad “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer” by Stevie Wonder and as a reason for choosing this song, Singleton indicated that for him “Never Dreamed You’d Leave in Summer” is Stevie at his best[1][14][4][6][8][17]. After years of experience as a background vocalist, Singleton made his solo debut by releasing his first single “Congratulations” on January 3, 2020[1][3][15][18][19][7][8][20][21][6][17]. Later in the same year on July 8, he released the seductive single “Skin”[3][14][19][5][7][8][6].
Influences[edit]
Singleton has cited Stevie Wonder, Daryl Coley, Michael Jackson, and John Legend as major musical inspirations to him[1][14][5][17]. Among artists who he has been listening the most, Singleton named Beyoncé, Brian McKnight, Charlie Wilson, Tamia, Ro James, Lizzo, and Billie Eilish[1][5]. He shared that his music is largely based on his respect for women and is influenced by his mother, grandmother, aunts, and sister[4].
Fashion style[edit]
Singleton's fashion style primarily consists of Urban European clothing and in 2020, he stated he likes European designers including Armani, Balmain, and Philipp Plein[1].
