He was born on 23 February 1850, the son of Alexander Lyon (1817-1902) and his wife Elizabeth Law (1817-1903). His father was a leather merchant on Broad Street in Aberdeen.[1]

At the end of the 19th century, he is described as a "hide and tallow factor and oleo oil manufacturer" with premises at 276/278 George Street, Aberdeen.[2]

On 12 January 1900, he was created Deputy Lieutenant of Aberdeen.[3]

In 1905, he was elected Lord Provost of Aberdeen and held this role for 3 years. He was knighted in September 1906 by King Edward VII during a visit to mark the quatercentenary of Marischal College.[citation needed] His works as Lord Provost included the creation of the Beach Esplanade.[citation needed]

He was an office bearer in the Seven Incorporated Trades of Aberdeen and a member of the Cairngorm Club and the West United Free Church.[citation needed]

He died at home in Queens Road in Aberdeen on 26 April 1927 and is buried in Nellfield Cemetery in south Aberdeen.[4]

Family

In 1875, he married Elsie Inglis (1853-1927) and they had at least eight children, most of whom predeceased their parents. Their youngest son, Robert Lyon, was a Captain in the Gordon Highlanders but was killed in the Battle of the Somme in 1916. His body was not found and he is amongst the thousands of names of those never found listed on the Thiepval Memorial.[5]
