Six Volts

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Six Volts were a New Zealand band active in the 1980s and 90s. The Six Volts helped push the boundaries and created genre-less music on the margins of rock, classical, jazz and free-form improvisation. Members were Steve Roche, Janet Roddick, David Donaldson, Anthony Donaldson, David Long and Neill Duncan.[1]

Starting as a four piece (the Four Volts), Steve Roche, Janet Roddick, David Donaldson and Anthony Donaldson were joined by David Long and Neill Duncan in 1988 to become the Six Volts.[2][3] They were part of the eclectic Wellington music scene that included Primitive Art Group, The Family Mallet and Jungle Suite, collectively known as the Braille Records collective.[4]

Their repertoire explored New Zealand content, such as The Magpies by Dennis Glover,[5] and they became involved in theatre productions such as Colin McColl's production of The Threepenny Opera[6] at Downstage Theatre in 1988, with Roddick as musical director.[7] Six Volts were the band playing on The Front Lawn's album Songs from the Front Lawn in 1989.[8]

Since 1991, the band members have moved on to other projects: David Long formed The Muttonbirds with Don McGlashan,[9] Anthony Donaldson has gone on to play in numerous Wellington bands, including the Labcoats, The Village Idiots and Teeth,[10] and Roddick, Roche and David Donaldson have written music for film and television as Plan 9.[11]
