Sleep Thieves are an Irish electronic band formed in Dublin, Ireland in 2012. The group consists of Sorcha Brennan (vocals, synths), Wayne Fahy (Vocals, synths, bass), and Keith Byrne (synths, guitar, bass,). Their first full length album, You Want the Night, was released in 2014.[1]

Artistry[edit]

The members bonded quickly over film soundtracks and vintage synths which set the seed for what would result in a sound they would describe as "haunting, dreamy and cinematic". Sleep Thieves, the group. The band collected together an analogue and digital studio setup. Jim Carroll of the Irish Times described their live performances as “disco noir”, which perfectly captures the hypnotic and pulsating live performances that the group bring to their audience.[2] 2014 single City of Hearts proved a breakthrough for the band with praise from mainstream media outlests such as The Guardian who said, "Sleep Thieves will definitely entice you to stay up late, whether to dance or drift off in a daydream, but you won't hold that against them."[3] They have cited artists such as Kate Bush, Fleetwood Mac and The War on Drugs as musical influences.[4] Pigeons & Planes described their sound as "perfect music for a late night drive through quieting streets, past twinkling lights and the occasional wanderer–the sort of music that sits wonderfully alongside the work of groups like Glass Candy and Chromatics”.[5] When asked how their style had developed from their EP to first album, Fahy admitted, "We do write and rehearse in a basement in Dublin city, no windows or natural light so that may have informed the dark shades of the album!".[6] They create their music with a strong DIY ethos by investing in their own recording equipment and studio. “The cost of creating music is massive, it's prohibitive. We decided to buy gear and equipment and set up our own studio. We don't want to owe anybody anything. We want to do it as we want to do it,” says Sorcha.[7]

History[edit]

With Millions of plays and almost 100,000 unique listeners per month on Spotify, the band has gained a substantial listener-ship worldwide.[8]
