Slobodan Božinović (Serbian Cyrillic: Слободан Божиновић) (1948-2005) was a Serbian folk accordionist with Romani roots. He is widely regarded as the most important accordionist in the music of the vlachs in Timočka Krajina, eastern Serbia, and was central in the creation of the modern style of playing in this genre..[1]
Slobodan Božinović was self taught as a musician, but apart from playing and developing the vlach style, he was a versatile musician - mastering multiple styles of Balkan music on a high level. He was very productive as a composer and arranger through his entire career - and is probably the one folk musician in the Balkans who recorded the largest number of solo albums - almost exclusively with his own compositions.[2]
He had his own ensemble band since the early 1970s and began collaboration with many different soloists. Especially his collaboration with Slobodan Domaćinović[3][4] (vocals) and Živa Dinulović[5] (saxophone) are classics in the genre - but he collaborated with almost all notable vlach artists of the time: Ljubinka Dudeić, Milisav Florić, Branka Bukacić, Ljubica Boldeskić, Žika Cvetković, Ljubodrag Radulović, Dragan Njegušić, Ika Petrišorović, Boban Marinović, Mikan Njegušić, Predrag Janković and many others.
Slobodan Božinović was also the teacher of several generations of accordionists among which the most important are his son Ljubiša Božinović[6] and Srdjan Demirović[7]
Most popular compositions: Borsko Kolo, Najnovije Borsko Kolo, Božinove Gajde
In 2017 Udruženje "Gergina" gave out a book with 25 compositions by Božinović, written down by the Danish accordionist Adam Ørvad[8][9]
Since 2014 an annual memorial concert have been hold in December in Bor, Serbia[10]
