In late November 1805, after the liberation of Smederevo from the Turks, the Serbian Governing Council was moved there and held the Smederevo Assembly (25-30 November), one of the most important assemblies of the Serb leaders (Karađorđe, Petar Dobrinjac, Stanoje Glavaš, Milenko Stojković, Matija Nenadović, and others) that influenced the future course of the Serbian Revolution.

Bringing into effect the decisions of the Smederevo Assembly, and according to the war plan designed by Karađorđe, in early 1806. Voivode Milenko Stojković's army marched in the Krajina and Ključ and took Poreč. With these and following successes the Porte was now more susceptible to reach an agreement with Serbia after the Governing Council sent their envoy Petar Ičko.

It was the aftermath of a series of victories that included the capture of the fortress of Smederevo in 1805 and culminated in the retaking of Belgrade in 1806 for the fifth time in a decade.
