Smileghost (Innyume)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Innyume (いんゆめ) (better known as smileghost.mp3) is a parody horror game made by an unknown user of Niconico (ニコニコ) in May of 2015. The game features jokes originating from Niconico and and other memes in the Japanese online community, such as an adult video actor from [A Midsummer Night’s Lewd Dream] (真夏の夜の淫夢), etc. The "Smileghost" itself is a meme, referencing a user of a message board with the Smileghost profile picture who got upset after misreading "Inmu" as "Innyume", which means "Lewd" in Japanese.

Gameplay[edit]

Innyume is a chaser horror game where multiple "Smileghosts" pursue the player around the Niconico headquarters building whilst trying to collect Japanese Katakana characters: り, マ, ギ, ン, and ガ. Once all of the characters are collected, the player must escape back to the start where a button is pressed to trigger the ending.

The building is maze-like and features multiple floors, each containing different characters. The Smileghosts can traverse up and down the stairs as a player can, and run slower than the player, but become faster and more prevalent as more characters are collected.

If the player is caught by a "Smileghost", the game cuts to a dark room filled with other Smileghosts circling the player and laughing while doing a dance. Once the screen fades, the player is brought back to the title screen.

Legacy and Rise to fame[edit]

The game became popular after Twitch streamer Vinny from Vinesauce played it during his Spooptober Japanese Horror Stream, on October 29th, 2017. After appearing on the stream, art and mods have popped up for the game.

The game became infamous for its strange nature and the music that accompanies the smileghost when it's nearby. The music is the intro theme of the classic arcade game Pac-Man, followed by a short loop of the theme Dichromatic Lotus Butterfly ~ Ancients from the game Seihou Shuusou Gyoku, released in December of 2000. The theme was later repurposed for the Touhou Project (東方 Project)'s series of fighting games as Reimu Hakurei's theme, after previously being rereleased in the 蓬莱人形 ~ Dolls in Pseudo Paradise. CD by video game developer Jun'ya "ZUN" Ota on December 30th, 2002. The looped part of the theme has become very popular on Niconico since it started to trend years ago, particularly with the community surrounding the popular webseries "Cookie☆".

Extras[edit]

The source of Innyume is unknown, however it was uploaded to gamebanana in 2018 by user Natko without any credited author. The game only features one version without any update history after the span of its release as of December 12th, 2020, and is currently the only known upload of the game online.

Innyume has been recreated in a .wad file compatible with GZDOOM by members of the doom modding community, and was uploaded on April 19, 2019 to the Doomworld Forums /WADs and Mods subsection by user DFF. The WAD features 7 keys instead of 5, 3 different difficulty modes, a slightly changed map layout, and a repurposing of the red Smileghost to pursue the player, which previously had only existed to frighten the player upon collecting the ン character.
