Snow Crash is an upcoming cyberpunk-science fiction television series based on the novel of the same name by Neal Stephenson.
Premise[edit]
In reality, Hiro Protagonist delivers pizza for Uncle Enzo's CosoNostra Pizza Inc., but in the Metaverse he's a warrior prince. Plunging headlong into the enigma of a new computer virus that's striking down hackers everywhere, he races along the neon-lit streets on a search-and-destroy mission for the shadowy virtual villain threatening to bring about infocalypse.[1]
Production[edit]
Prior to this iteration of the adaption, several attempts to adapt the book had been made upon it's release in 1992. In 1996, Jeffrey Nachmanoff was set to adapt the novel for The Kennedy/Marshall Company and Touchstone Pictures. Marco Brambilla was attached to direct the film.[2]
In June 2012, Joe Cornish was set to direct a new film attempt for Paramount Pictures.[3] In 2013, Stephenson described Cornish's script as "amazing", but also warned that there was no guarantee that a film would be made.[4] Producer Frank Marshall also praised the script in 2016, and felt it was possible the film could go into production the next year.[5] However, in August 2017, it was re-purposed into a television series for Amazon Studios.[6] In a January 2019 interview, Cornish stated the reason Snow Crash didn't get a greenlight at Paramount was "just too huge and ambitious and complicated and sophisticated for a modern studio".[7] In December 2019, HBO Max would pick up the series, with Cornish set to direct and executive produce, along with Michael Bacall co-writing the series and showrunning alongside Angela Robinson.[8]
