Snthesis is a data management software company, focused on data integration and harmonization solutions for scientific research. Founded in 2018 in the United States, the company’s headquarters are in Durham, NC.[1]
History[edit]
The founder, Emerson Huitt, worked at the bench in a pharmaceuticals lab before leveraging his software-development training to create one-off custom data management systems.[2] The advent of artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms (and drawing some logic inspiration from the online search and advertising industry) allowed development of a data integration tool that reduces human intervention in the metadata normalization process.[3]
Initially providing custom solutions for a number of private clients, Snthesis then launched a commercial version of their software, named Snthesis Bio, in February of 2021.[4]
Snthesis, inc was ranked among the top 11 best NC Agricultural technology startups by Startup Pill in 2021.[5]
Software and use[edit]
The Snthesis platform, Snthesis Bio, is designed to ingest data in a wide variety of formats, including spreadsheets, Word docs, PDF’s and handwritten notes, as well as API connections with other databases such as LIMS, EHR systems and Electronic Lab Notebooks. Connections to public and private datasets, linked to a variety of ontologies, are also possible.[6]
The platform then integrates and harmonizes the data and metadata from all sources and creates one knowledge graph for search and discovery. The platform is not restricted to a set data format, process or output.[7]
At Bio-IT World 2021 in Boston, the company announced and demonstrated a new tool, Snthesis Merge. Merge harmonizes patient records containing ICD10 disease codes to relevant gene expression data in public datasets such as Refine.bio.[8]
Industry[edit]
Snthesis is primarily focused on Life Sciences, although the Bio platform could see use in any industry where the volume of data created at machine scale can outstrip the ability to process that data at human scale. The company also offers consulting services for digital data transformations.[9]
