Sochani (also spelt as Sochany) is a village in Dadyal Tehsil of Mirpur District of Azad Kashmir, Pakistan. Located 2.34 miles or 3.77 km from Dadyal, it lies in the epicentre of villages known as Ghora, Rawal Mala, Samlotha, Darruni, Batroi, Tarutta, and Zaman Chowk.
Demography
According to the 1998 census of Pakistan, its population was 536.[1]
History
Like many villages in the Mirpur region, many villagers have emigrated to the United Kingdom and have settled mainly in the city of Birmingham. This emigration commenced during the 1940s, and increased in the 60s with the work on the Mangla Dam flooding surrounding areas.[2] Families signed up to work in British manual labour, which allowed for the ease of emigration over the years to come, contributing to the Birmingham present today.
One curious mention of Sochani is of the wrestling star Shak Khan, whose parents originate from there. [3]
Though it still remains a mystery as to why Sochani remains unknown to the younger generations of AJK, it remains in the epicentre of their motherland.
It is now of popular fashion that households in the area are being converted into mansion-sized structures, thus the second emigration of British Pakistanis back to Azad Kashmir, some alone and some with a good percentage of their families.
