The Société des peintres et sculpteurs jurassiens (SPSJ) was founded in 1954. The Société exists to encourage and develop the arts, and promote new talents in the districts of La Neuveville, Courtelary, Franches-Montagnes, Moutier, Delémont, and Porrentruy, Canton of Jura, Switzerland.[1]
Founding[edit]
The roots of the organization extend to 1933, when Laurent Boillat and Roger Châtelain organized a Salon des Beaux-Arts in Tramelan. World War II intervened, and it was not until 1954 that Boillat and Châtelain were able to bring the plans for an artist's guild to fruition. The first members included Boillat, Châtelain, Paul Bovée, Gérard Bregnard, Walter Bucher, Antonio Erba, Gérard Rohrer, Maurice Lapaire, Serge-Eric Vuilleumier, Ernest Monbaron, Jean-Louis Jobin, Robert Dietlin, Rene Berlincourt, Serge Voisard, Pierre Nicolet, Pierre Rebetez, Louis Poupon, Michel Wolfender, Serge Chopard, Fritz Bögli, and Henri Aragon.[2]
Membership[edit]
Prospective members are required to be active artists living in the Jura, Bernese Jura, or Laufen district. A cover letter, CV, and photos of at least 10 works must be submitted to the Secrétaire, who will present them to the membership committee. Those approved by the committee will be voted upon by the general membership at the annual meeting.[3]
