Social Enabled Education (SEE) Namibia is a youth-led organization that provides voter and civic education to the general public.[1] Established in 2019, as I Am Voting Namibia, now SEE (Socially Enabled Education), it is the first youth organization to be accredited by the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN). The organization is registered under the Ministry of sports, youth, and national services.[2]

Vision, Mission and Values

According to the SEE Namibia Organization, these are their vision, mission, and values.

Vision

Namibian youth actively participating in democratic processes.

Mission

Provide transformative and empowering leadership opportunities to the youth through civic engagement, social education, and leadership capacity building. Our core work will be achieved through becoming a strategic partner to the government in ensuring that all democratic rights are upheld both by the state and the citizens at large.

Values

Independence

While we depend on support of our partners and donors, we are independent of outside influences. Our leading light is the vision and mission of this network.

Inclusiveness

We recognize the powerful role played by local authorities in times of crisis and in development. We want to foster an understanding of the important role played by local authorities in times of crisis and in fostering development.

Commitment

The belief that mutual trust is key to success and this trust is generated by the commitment pledged by the association towards all the society members.

Professionalism and objectivity

The work is based on professional practices that are clear, smooth, and well known to all the pioneers of the organization from various social and economic levels.

Meaningful Youth participation

Young people are agents for positive change. Youth are not merely victims or perpetrators of violence or beneficiaries of peace-building initiatives. They are stakeholders and actors who positively contribute to peacebuilding and conflict transformation.

Voter's Registration

As the day of registration approached, the organization received more traffic of questions on where to register and the difference between the two elections that were being registered. They took to social media by creating a hashtag #itwillendinvoting to engage and notify people where they can register. A further 230 calls were received enquiring about the meaning of a voter's card that was not applicable for local authority elections.

After the registration period ended, the organization received a request for the extension of the registration period as most people claimed that they were not aware and others did not have time. This led to a petition being supported by the organization that managed to approximately receive 2300 signatories, proving to the organization the petition had a minimal figure for it to be presented to the commission when factoring in the pandemic and the allocated budget to the electoral commission.

Voter Engagement

With our partnership with NANSO and the accreditation from the Electoral Commission in civic and voters education, it has allowed the organization to capitalize on ensuring that we decentralize our efforts and managed to offer voter and civic education training in 7 regions: Khomas, !Karas, Hardap, Otjozondjupa, Ohangwena, Kavango West, and Zambezi.

Furthermore, the organization also worked with the Student leadership of both the University of Namibia (UNAM) and Namibian University of Science and Technology (NUST) in making sure that the representation of every institution was there. Various student leaders had interviews on various Radio Stations in Namibia. The organization also prepared a final dialogue pertaining to the elections on the radio during the last week of elections with our Social Media Campaigns under the hashtag #Itwillendinvoting trending for 4 weeks on Twitter. Members of the organization had radio and TV interviews on the local TV Morning Show, Good morning Namibia.[3]

Election Day

Having also received voter education training from Namibia's institute of Democracy, the organization has created a capacity building for the youth which has allowed, both NANSO and IVN representatives to be local observers on the recently concluded elections. Having carried themselves in a professional manner and their willingness to work is exceptional. With the total votes cast of 456 808 compared to 164 201 votes cast in 2015, there is an exponential growth in voter turnout from 36.6% to 49.92.
