The Societies of Photographers is long-established Professional Photographers Association based in the United Kingdom for full-time and aspiring photographers, with over 5,000 members around the world.[1]

'The Societies' is one of the UK’s leading qualifying bodies for photographers, and helps photographers improve their photography and business through a number of benefits of membership.

The association encourages development and discussion, relating to photography and promotes the interests of photographers via seminars, workshops, roadshows,[2] webinars and industry recognised qualifications.[3] The group provides lists of recognised and qualified professional photographers throughout the world, all of them meeting strict standards of conduct as laid down in the code of conduct.[4]

History[edit]

The association originally formed as the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers was formed by the Master Photographers Association in 1988 and after two years the 'Society' was passed on to Derek Avery FSWPP who at the time was the president of the MPA, Derek then became the Society Chief Executive.

In 1999 the SWPP moved its head office to North Wales, UK when Phil Jones took over the role of Chief Executive Officer of the organisation from Derek Avery. The BPPA’s merger came in January 2000 when Nigel Greenstreet retired from the post of Chief Executive.

The Society of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers, SICIP, SIMPP, SISLP, SITTP SISEP and SIFGP were formed in 2008 to represent the diversity of skills within the photographic industry.

In June 2021, Colin Jones took over the CEO role.[5]
