The Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate and Collaborators[5] (Latin: Societas Filiarum Mariae Immaculatae et Collaborators; abbreviated DMI) is a female religious institute was founded by Fr. Jesuadimai Emmanuel Arul Raj[6][7] (a.k.a Fr J.E Arulraj). Fr. J.E. Arul Raj[8] is a catholic priest and founded other two religious societies - Missionaries of Mary Immaculate[9][10] and Associates Movement International.[11] The DMI is a society of Apostolic Life[12] for mission ad gentes[13] of Pontifical Right[14][15]under His Holiness Pope Francis and the Pro-Prefect of the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples, His Eminence Luis Antonio Gokim Cardinal Tagle. Since 2024, the Generalate of the society has been located in Rome, Italy. Previously, the Generalate was in Ghaziabad, in the Diocese of Meerut, under the guidance of Archbishop Francis Kalist, who was then the Bishop of Meerut and is now the Archbishop of Pondicherry-Cuddalore.
History[edit]
The Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) was founded[16][17] on January 28, 1984, in Pandravedu,[18] India, by Fr. Jesuadimai Emmanuel Arul Raj[6]. Initially formed to address local needs in education and healthcare, the congregation then expanded its mission to include various humanitarian and social justice initiatives.[19] The society has since established educational institutions, healthcare centers, and social services[20] in various parts of India and beyond.
Global Presence and Activities[edit]
The DMI focuses on a wide range of activities including education, humanitarian efforts,[21] healthcare,[22][23] and social justice across ten countries:India,[24] Tanzania[21], Zambia,[25] Malawi,[26] Ethiopia[23], South Sudan[27][28][22], Italy, Central African Republic,[29] Papua New Guinea,[30][31] and Kenya.[32]
For example, in South Sudan, DMI established a network of schools and healthcare facilities aimed at improving the lives of rural communities. Their work has been recognized by local and international organizations, including awards for educational excellence.[9][21][22][28][27]
Notable Projects and Impact[edit]
DMI is involved in various notable projects, including:
- Education: The society runs several educational institutions, from primary schools to universities, providing quality education to thousands of students in underprivileged areas.[33]
- Healthcare: DMI operates hospitals and clinics, offering medical services to communities with limited access to healthcare.[23]
- Social Justice and Women Empowerment: DMI's programs focus on empowering women and promoting social justice, with a particular emphasis on supporting victims of domestic violence and human trafficking.[27][29][30]

Recognition and Criticism[edit]
DMI has been recognized for its contributions to education and social services, receiving accolades from both church and secular organizations.[86]
- Vatican Ambassador Visit: In 2023, Archbishop Leopoldo Girelli, Apostolic Nuncio to India, visited St. Joseph University, acknowledging the Society's role in promoting education and social welfare in Nagaland.[87]
- Teacher Education Program in Zambia: In collaboration with the Zambian government, DMI St. Eugene University launched a fast track teacher education program aimed at upgrading teachers' qualifications from diploma to degree levels. This initiative supports the country's efforts to improve the quality of education by equipping teachers with advanced qualifications.[88]
- G20 University Connect Lecture Series: St. Joseph University hosted the G20 University Connect Lecture Series in 2023, showcasing its growing academic influence in Nagaland.[89]
- Bachelor of Physical Education in Nagaland: The DMI's St Joseph University became the first in Nagaland to introduce a Bachelor of Physical Education program, reflecting the Society's commitment to holistic education.[90]
- Support for South Sudanese Children: The Society has also been instrumental in keeping over 10,000 children in school in South Sudan. Collaborating with other Catholic nuns and priests, their efforts have ensured access to education despite the challenges of conflict and displacement in the region.[91]
- Assistance in Papua New Guinea: In Papua New Guinea, the Society has been actively providing education and basic care to underprivileged children, ensuring access to schooling and improving their living conditions.[92]
- Housing for Civil War Victims in South Sudan: The Society has been actively involved in constructing houses for civil war victims in South Sudan, providing shelter for displaced families and helping them rebuild their lives amidst the ongoing conflict.[93]
- Transport Service in South Sudan: The Society has supported a transport service initiative in South Sudan's remote villages, ensuring that essential supplies and services, including healthcare and education, reach isolated communities affected by conflict and poverty.[94]
However, like many religious organizations, it has also faced criticism and challenges, particularly in balancing its religious mission with the socio-political dynamics of the regions it serves. Over the years, the Society of Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI) has faced several controversies and criticisms, particularly related to its educational institutions in Africa and India.
- Labor Disputes: In 2020, DMI St John the Baptist University[95] in Malawi came under scrutiny for controversially sacking 10 lecturers who were protesting against a COVID-19-related pay cut.[96][97][98] The incident sparked significant media coverage and raised questions about the university's labor practices .
- Student Safety and Institutional Response: The DMI St. John the Baptist University in Malawi faced severe criticism after a student was killed in an altercation with a villager. The university's response, which included closing the campus, was widely reported and criticized for failing to ensure student safety.[99] Similarly, in India, an engineering student at a DMI College of Engineering in Chennai committed suicide in 2010, leading to public outcry and criticism of the institution's handling of student welfare.[100][101][102]
- Institutional Quality and Accreditation Issues: DMI has faced challenges regarding the quality and accreditation of its institutions. In 2015, two DMI-run colleges in Songea and Makambako, Tanzania, were declared unfit by the Tanzania Commission for Universities, affecting over 2,000 students.[103][104][105] The situation led to unrest among students, further complicating the university's reputation in the region. Additionally, in 2022, the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) in Malawi suspended the education program at DMI's university due to concerns about the quality of education.[106] In September 2023, another significant challenge emerged for the DMI institutions. The Kanyakumari Medical Mission Research Centre, affiliated with the society, had its MBBS seat allotments withdrawn by the Medical Council of India. The decision was taken due to alleged discrepancies and concerns regarding the quality of education provided at the institution, adding to the ongoing scrutiny of DMI's educational standards.[107] Moreover, the society's colleges in Tanzania continue to face hurdles. The Tanzania Commission for Universities barred two DMI-affiliated universities from enrolling students due to unresolved accreditation issues and concerns about the institutions' adherence to academic standards. This ongoing issue has highlighted the persistent challenges DMI faces in maintaining the quality and reputation of its educational network.[105]
These incidents highlight some of the challenges DMI faces in managing its widespread educational network. While the society has made significant contributions to education and social services, these controversies indicate areas where improvements are needed.
