The software service industry plays a large role in the economy of Uttar Pradesh. It contributed nearly 30% of the gross state domestic product in 2017–18.[1] Uttar Pradesh is the 'IT-Hub' of North India, with a share of software exports next to that of Karnataka. But unlike South Indian states, IT enterprises are limited to particular areas only, such as Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad, which lie in the National Capital Region (NCR), commercial capital Kanpur and in the state capital Lucknow. Lucknow[edit]

Multiple software and IT companies are present in the city. Tata Consultancy Services is one of the major companies with its campus in Gomti Nagar, which also is the second-largest such establishment in Uttar Pradesh. HCL Technologies also started its training program with 150 candidates in April 2016 at HCL Lucknow campus.[3] There are many local open source technology companies.[4] The city is also home to a number of important national and state level headquarters for companies including Sony Corporation and Reliance Retail. A sprawling 100 acres (40 ha) IT city costing 15 billion Rupees is planned by the state government at the Chak Ganjaria farms site on the road to Sultanpur and they have already approved special economic zone status for the project, which is expected to create thousands of job opportunities in the state.[5][6][7]

Noida[edit]

In the last 15 years, Noida has also become a hub for software and mobile app development companies like Microsoft,[8] Arm Holdings,[9] HCL,[10] Samsung and Barclays.[11] These companies are contributing to the city's economy with their software product development and service export in foreign currencies. Samsung recently invested 50 billion (US$700 million) in Noida, under the Make in India initiative.[12]

Noida is home to India's largest unicorn startup Paytm,[13] a financial services company with multiple ventures including eCommerce, mutual-fund investments, utility bill payments and person-person payments.
