Solarus is a multiplatform game engine, specialized for 2D graphics and the Action-RPG genre. It is distributed under free and open source license.[1], and is written in C++[2]
Features
Solarus features a Lua API, covering the main aspects of game development: graphics, music and sounds, player inputs, movements, etc. Its API also includes a whole part specifically dedicated to the Action-RPG genre and its various recurring elements: treasures, switches, blocks, etc. While most of its original functionalities were oriented towards the creation of games inspired by and taking up the main elements of The Legend of Zelda games[3], the engine and the API are gradually evolving towards a more free and modular approach.
A game editor named Solarus Quest Editor is available to help game development with Solarus. It includes multiple features such as a map editor, a sprite editor and a tileset editor.[4]
A game launcher named Solarus Launcher is provided to allow players to easily launch games made with Solarus, on the same principle as an emulator.
Solarus has been used for commercial games such as Yarntown[5][6] and Ocean's Heart[7], including a Nintendo Switch port[8] for the latter, but also as an educational tool by schools[9][10], summer camps[11] and government structures such as the INSEE[12]. It has also been used by the research community for studies about video games[13][14].
History
Solarus was originally created to overcome the shortcomings of RPG Maker software in the field of Action-RPG games[15]. Christopho, the creator of Solarus, had developed the hobbyist game The Legend of Zelda: Mystery of Solarus with RPG Maker in his spare time, and wanted to remake his game to improve gameplay.[16] A basic C++ engine was therefore written in 2006, specifically for this original game. It was named after the amulet of Solarus, one of the game's plot elements.
Solarus then gradually detached itself from its roots linked to The Legend of Zelda in order to get rid of any potentially copyrighted material[17]. The engine is now completely free, both the code (GPL v3 license) and the visuals and embedded resources (CC-BY-SA 4.0 license).
The French non-profit organization Solarus Labs was created in 2020[18] in order to support the project and to legally receive donations.
