SolidCraft is a free and open-source parametric three-dimensional computer-aided design (CAD) application written in Rust. It uses constrained sketches and an editable feature timeline to define and modify solid models. The software runs on desktop operating systems and in web browsers, and provides a command-line interface and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server for automation.[4] It is distributed under a choice of the MIT License or Apache License 2.0.[1]

    History and development

SolidCraft was initially developed under the GitHub account bherbruck with the name 'SolveCraft'. Its initial source commit dates from 7 October 2026, and its first public prerelease, version 0.1.0, was published on 9 October.[5][2] The project was developed with the assistance of AI coding tools.[6] On 11 October the project was renamed to SolidCraft, and on 16 October[7], its repository moved to the Tangency Labs organization.[8]

Version 0.18.0 introduced a redesigned interface with a ribbon, floating panels, command search and revised context menus. Version 0.22.0 added a Render workspace with GPU rendering, studio lighting, materials and image export.[9][10]

    Features

SolidCraft uses a sketch-based approach to parametric modeling. Sketches consist of lines, circles, arcs and splines, with dimensions and geometric constraints managed by a constraint solver.[11] Sketch profiles can be extruded, revolved, swept or lofted to form solids. Further modeling tools include fillets, chamfers, shells, holes, patterns and Boolean operations.[12]

The modeling history is displayed as a timeline of features, each of which can be edited, suppressed, reordered or deleted. Modifying an earlier feature causes the model to rebuild from that point onward.[12] Dimensions can be linked through named parameters and expressions. SolidCraft also provides components and joints for assemblies, motion studies, sheet-metal modeling with flat-pattern generation, and tools for designing plastic enclosures.[1]

    Architecture and automation

SolidCraft is organized into Rust crates covering geometry, sketching, modeling, document history, file handling, commands and the user interface.[13] The interface is built with egui and wgpu. The browser version runs through WebAssembly, using WebGPU or WebGL 2 for rendering.[14][13]

Solid models use boundary representations based on the truck geometry libraries. Operations such as filleting, chamfering and shelling are implemented in SolidCraft's own kernel layer.[15] As of October 2026, a separate development branch was tracking a transition to an SMLib-based kernel through SolidCore.[16]

The graphical interface, command-line tool, scripting system and MCP server use the same command engine, with commands accepting JSON parameters.[13] Through the MCP server, compatible AI agents can create and modify models, inspect and measure geometry, and export files. It can operate either alongside the graphical application or in a headless session.[17]

    File formats

SolidCraft saves editable designs in its native .sc format, while retaining compatibility with the earlier .solidcraft extension. Designs can also be saved and loaded as plain JSON. For geometry exchange, the application supports STEP and IGES, alongside mesh formats such as STL, 3MF and OBJ.[18]

Imported STEP and IGES geometry is added to the design history as a base feature, allowing further modeling operations. Mesh bodies can be viewed, measured, moved and exported, although solid-modeling tools require boundary-representation geometry. SolidCraft also supports glTF mesh imports, DXF exports of sketches and sheet-metal flat patterns, and URDF exports for assemblies and joints.[18]

    Reception

In an October 2026 review published by Fabbaloo, Kerry Stevenson described SolidCraft as responsive and found its modeling workflow familiar. During testing, he created simple objects, applied fillets and transferred a model to Autodesk Fusion using STEP. The review was limited to a selection of modeling operations.[6]

In a review published on 12 October 2026, CAD educator Teruki Obara reported testing basic modeling, sheet-metal functions and assembly joints. He found parts of the interface familiar but encountered filleting errors and concluded that SolidCraft could not then replace his Autodesk Fusion workflow.[19]

Linus Tech Tips evaluated SolidCraft version 0.16.2 alongside Purrametric in its video Pros Try AI-Cloned Engineering Tools, published on 27 October 2026. The tested versions were accessed on 19 October.[20]
