Solidarity Against Disability Discrimination (SADD, Korean: 전국장애인차별철폐연대; Jeongukjangaeinchabyeolcheolpyeyeondae) is a South Korean organization established in 2007.

Activities[edit]

  • Movement rights for Disabled
  • Abolition of the Disability rating system[1][2]
  • Abolition of the Obligatory support system[1]

History[edit]

On January 25, 2001, A passenger who was using a lift for the disabled at Oido station died from a fall.[3][4] After the accident, the activists with disabilities demanded that the Seoul Metropolitan Government install elevators in all subway stations, but when the Seoul Metropolitan Government did not respond, they began to protest by occupying the railroad tracks.[5][6]

In 2007, the current SADD was established to guarantee the overall human rights of the disabled.[7]

Public transport protests[edit]

Since 2021, SADD has hosted public transportation protests.[8] The protesters insisted on ending discrimination against the disabled and guaranteeing the right to move.[9]

During the protest, the platform screen doors and the wall of the platform were damaged.[10]

On February 15, 2023, SADD filed a petition to the United Nations condemning the excessive suppression of protests by the disabled.[11][12]

Criticism[edit]

Due to SADD's subway riding protest, the operation of the subway was delayed, causing inconvenience for passengers.[13] Subway passengers said that although it is a method that is worthy of consideration in reality for disabled people, they could not to protests that cause damage to the majority.[14]

In February 2022, a passenger pleaded with swear words to go see his grandmother's deathbed, and a protester said, "Please take the bus.", drawing a lot of public outrage.[15]
