Dr. Somashekhar S.P..[1] (born 1 May 1972) is the Chairman and Head of the Department of Surgical Oncology at MHEPL (Manipal Health Enterprise) and is known for performing a high number of robotic complex oncosurgeries in India. He is credited with establishing the HIPEC & PIPAC program in India and for leading the largest HIPEC program in Asia. Somashekhar also performed the first Sentinel Lymph Node Biopsy (SLNB) procedure in India[2] and implemented AI technology for breast cancer management[3][4]
Biography
Early life and Education
Dr. Somashekhar S.P. was born in Sampige village in Tumkur district, Karnataka. He did his early schooling in Chitradurga and Davangere and then studied at STJ Anubhavamantapa, where he received a national merit scholarship. Somashekhar completed his medical schooling and graduation from Mysore University, JJM Davangere and subsequently, through All India National Competitive Merit Exam, he did his masters in general surgery followed by a super speciality in surgical oncology from Ahmedabad with a university gold medal. He then received Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons (FRCS) from Edinburgh followed by multiple clinical fellowships in the USA, Paris, Taiwan, and Korea.
Career
Dr. Somashekhar S.P. helped establish the Manipal Comprehensive Cancer Centre in Manipal Hospital, Bengaluru, where he has been working as a Consultant Surgical and Gynec. Oncologist for the past 20 years. Manipal Hospitals were the first in the country and the second in the world to implement IBM Watson for Oncology, an AI technology for diagnosis and treatment of cancer.[5] Prior to this, he worked as a Consultant and Assistant Professor in the Department of Oncosurgery at Gujarat Cancer Research Institute, Ahmedabad for 6 months. Somashekhar is a teaching faculty for MS-General surgery PG students for Kathmandu University Medical College students and for Diplomate of National Board (DNB) examinations Surgical Oncology training program. He is a reviewer of various scientific journals like the World Journal of Oncology, World Journal of Surgery, European Journal of Surgical Oncology, Annals of Oncology, Indian Journal of Surgery, Indian Journal of Surgical Oncology, etc.
Hobbies and Interests
His hobbies and interests include playing chess, reading, traveling, and listening to Indian classical music. Somashekhar also plays chess professionally and has won the Intercollegiate Medical Chess Championship. He has represented Mysore University in All India Chess Championship and has won various open chess tournaments.
