Education[edit]
Johnson trained in medicine at the University of Cambridge (pre-clinical) and University of Oxford (clinical).[1] She also obtained a BA (Hons) degree in Social and Political Sciences from the University of Cambridge, an MSc in Social Psychology from the London School of Economics and Political Science and a Doctorate in Medicine (DM) from the University of Oxford.
Johnson trained in psychiatry at the Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital, where she developed an interest in improving care for people with long-term mental health problems, such as psychosis.[2]
Career and research[edit]
Johnson obtained early research posts, including as Clinical Lecturer in Community Psychiatry, at the Institute of Psychiatry, where she was involved in research projects such as the PRiSM Study of community mental health care for people with severe mental illnesses,[3] and led on writing a report for the King’s Fund’s London Commission on London’s mental health services.[4]
Johnson moved to UCL in 1997, becoming Reader in 2007 and Professor of Social and Community Psychiatry in 2008.
Johnson’s research at UCL has focused mainly on the clinical and social needs and the treatment outcomes of people with significant mental health problems, such as psychosis (especially early psychosis) and bipolar disorder.[1] She has had a major role in studies of crisis services,[5] including evaluations of crisis resolution and home treatment teams[6] and of alternatives to standard inpatient care.[7] She led the CORE programme, which helped define and evaluate a clear model of crisis care that has been influential in UK policy and taken up in a number of countries,[8] and that also included a randomised controlled trial showing a peer supported self-management intervention to be effective in preventing readmission after a crisis;[9] the CIRCLE trial, which investigated the effectiveness of a contingency management intervention for cannabis use in early psychosis;[10][11] and the FINCH study, a pilot trial of a psychosocial intervention to reduce repeat compulsory admissions under the Mental Health Act 1983.[12]
Since 2017, Johnson has been Director of the NIHR Mental Health Policy Research Unit (MHPRU) for England, which provides research evidence to the Department of Health and Social Care and its arm’s length bodies to support mental health policy. MHPRU’s work has included providing evidence[13] for the Independent Review of the Mental Health Act 1983,[14] and research on social interventions in mental health,[15] crisis care models,[16] service models for people with complex emotional needs,[17][18][19] and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on mental health services, staff and service users,[20][21][22] including the switch to telemental health.[23][24][25]
Johnson and her colleagues have also published widely on loneliness and mental health,[26] and since 2018 she has led the cross-disciplinary Loneliness and Social Isolation in Mental Health Network, funded by UK Research and Innovation. She has been co-chief investigator on the Community Navigator feasibility trial and the Community Navigator multicentre randomised controlled trial of an intervention for loneliness among people with severe depression and/or anxiety, led by Professor Brynmor Lloyd-Evans.[27][28]
Johnson’s main educational role at UCL is as course director for two MSc programmes (Mental Health Sciences Research[29] and Clinical Mental Health Sciences[30]), whose primary aim is to train the next generation of researchers in mental health. She is also Director of Education in the Division of Psychiatry.[1]
Since 2003 Johnson has also worked as a consultant psychiatrist in the Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust's Early Intervention Service for psychosis, which she co-founded and has helped to develop.[1] The main focus of her clinical work is on people experiencing the early stages of bipolar disorder.
