Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (film)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

This draft was declined 24 hours ago with the explanation that unreleased films are very seldom notable, as per the future films guidelines. It has been resubmitted with only minimal changes, and is still a draft that does not satisfy film notability guidelines, and does not make an unlikely explanation of why this film is notable. The film is not likely to be individually notable until it is released, and this draft is not likely to be accepted until the film is released.

If the film is released ahead of schedule while this draft still exists, you may discuss with the reviewer about removing the rejection. Otherwise you may discuss with the reviewers, but the reviewers will almost certainly say that unreleased films are not considered notable. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:20, 4 September 2020 (UTC)}}

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is an upcoming sequel to the 2020 film Sonic the Hedgehog, based on the character of the same name by Sega, distributed by Paramount Pictures. The film will be directed by Jeff Fowler and written by Pat Casey and Josh Miller.

The idea of a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog was first brought up by star Jim Carrey, who expressed interest in reprising his role as Dr. Robotnik in such a sequel. Following the warm critical reception and financial success of Sonic, several cast and crew members, including director Fowler, expressed interest in developing a sequel closer to the original video games, while star James Marsden revealed that he signed-up for several sequels in March 2020. A sequel was confirmed in May 2020, with most of the first film's crew set to return. It is scheduled to be released on April 8, 2022.

Development[edit]

In January 2020, Jim Carrey expressed interest in starring in a sequel to the film Sonic the Hedgehog (2020), based on the video game franchise of the same name, stating that the expansion of his character in the film, Dr. Robotnik, could lead up to a potential sequel, "I wouldn't mind going to do another one because it was so much fun, first of all, and a real challenge to try to convince people that I have a triple-digit IQ... There is so much room, you know, Robotnik has not reached his apotheosis."[1] In March 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog star James Marsden confirmed that he had signed on for multiple sequels to Sonic.[2]

By April 2020, Marsden expressed interest in a sequel featuring several characters from the video games, including Tails, who appeared in a mid-credits scene in the first film.[3] Director Jeff Fowler also expressed interest in developing a sequel that both centers on the title character and Tails' relationship and further develops Dr. Robotnik.[4] Later that month, Schwartz said that he felt it made sense for Paramount Pictures to not to have announced a sequel by that point due to the COVID-19 pandemic though he added that he was also interested on a sequel featuring Tails and a more game-accurate portrayal of Robotnik.[5]

By the end of April 2020, Sonic the Hedgehog co-writer Pat Casey revealed that there had been talks about a sequel, though the film hasn't been green-lighted by Paramount by that point.[6] He also said that Carrey was interested in wearing a fat suit in a sequel in order for Robotnik's appearance to more closely resemble his video game counterpart's.[6] Casey also hinted that a sequel could feature Sonic's "Super Sonic" form and the Chaos Emeralds from the video games and that it could explore a potential connection between supporting Sonic character Knuckles the Echidna and the echidna tribe seen at the first film's opening sequence.[6]

On May 28, 2020, Paramount Pictures confirmed that a sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog is in development. Fowler is set to return as director, while Casey and Josh Miller will return as writers.[7] Neal H. Mortiz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara will produce the sequel, having previously co-produced the first film alongside Takeshi Ito, while Tim Miller, Hajime Satomi, and Haruki Satomi will return from the first film as executive producers.[7]

On December 8, 2020, it was confirmed that artist Tyson Hesse would reprise his role for storyboard artist Fill Marc as he said the following: "I wrapped up work on Lower Decks Season 2 last week. Excited 2 announce I’ve been working on the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Story Team with Jeff Fowler and Tyson Hesse at Blur Studio. My first live action feature coming in 2022." Marc a bit afterward deleted his post from Twitter but his post from Instagram remains intact. This will be Marc's first live-action project.[8]

On December 22 2020, it was reported that the character Knuckles The Echidna would appear in the sequel, along with a new character named "Randall".[9]

Filming[edit]

Filming is set to take place between March 2021 and May 2021, under the working title Emerald Hill,[10] a nod to the name of the first level in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.[11]

Release[edit]

The film is scheduled to release on April 8, 2022.[12][13]
