Sonny Khan (born 1998)[1][2][3] is the founder and current CEO of the non-profit Paani Project and a marketing manager at Microsoft.[4]

Early life[edit]

Khan was born in Michigan. His mother and father are both Pakistani. Khan graduated from Jackson High School, in Jackson, Michigan in 2016. While in high school, Khan actively volunteered at Henry Ford Allegiance Health, high school and nursing home.[5] Khan was a recipient of the Gates Millennium Scholarship and Horatio Alger National Scholarship while he was a student at the University of Michigan.[3][6][7]

In 2016, he was named the State of Michigan's 'Youth Volunteer of the Year' by the then Governor of Michigan, Rick Snyder.[8][9]

In 2017, he founded Paani Project, a nonprofit student organization that seeks to alleviate the water crisis in Pakistan by raising awareness and funds to build wells in the country.[10][11] The organization has raised over $1.5 million and built over 1800 wells in South Asia.[12]

Paani Project[edit]

Paani, which means water in Urdu, was founded in 2017 at the University of Michigan and operated by student volunteers dedicated to alleviating the water and sanitation crisis in Pakistan.[13][14]

Personal Life[edit]

Khan is a Los Angeles Lakers fan, and in 2019, he built a well in honor of Lakers small forward LeBron James.[15]
