Sophia Jozwiak (born December 1, 1999), known professionally as Sophia Dove, is an American singer, songwriter, and performer.[2] In 2014, she entered and won the local singing competition Farmington Idol with an acoustic cover of "Me and My Broken Heart" by Rixton.[3] This initiated her solo performance career, which included acoustic sets at local farmers markets and outside of the Sunflour Bakehaus in her hometown of Farmington, MI.[4] She started a YouTube channel to post original music and covers, which has since received over 23,000 views.[5] In 2019, Jozwiak started performing under the name of Sophia Dove to honor her grandmother.[6] She has released three singles to major streaming services under this name: "Summer Lover," "His & Hers," and "DTW."[7]
Life and career
1999-2013: Early life
Sophia Jozwiak was born in San Diego, California to two writers, Rebecca Kavanagh and Don Jozwiak.[8] The family moved back to Michigan when Sophia was still a baby.[9] She has one younger brother, Jackson, and grew up with a cockapoo named Sparky.[10]
Sophia started writing songs when she was 8 years old.[11] She took piano lessons during her youth and played percussion in the school band from 5th through 8th grade.[12] She taught herself ukulele and guitar at age 12, briefly taking guitar and voice lessons from Axis Music Academy in middle school.[13]
Throughout her public schooling, Sophia was involved in community theater, landing roles in productions of Schoolhouse Rock, Blast from Our Past, Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Seussical, The Little Mermaid, and Shrek the Musical.[14][15] She took dance lessons in jazz and tap, performing in a handful of recitals over the years.
From kindergarten through senior year of high school, Sophia submitted photographs, illustrations, writing pieces, and musical compositions to the PTA Reflections Program.[16] She received dozens of awards at the district, regional, and state levels, ultimately receiving recognition from state representative Christine Greig for 12 years of participation in 2017.[17]
2014-2017: Career beginnings
After winning Farmington Idol in 2014, Sophia began busking during the summers.[18] She started at Sunflour Bakehaus, then moved to the Farmington farmer's market and the Farmington Civic Theatre.[19][20][21][22] During the school year at this time, she participated in 3 annual Coffee House performances at her high school: in 2015, she sang the original song "Change the Ending;"[23] in 2016, she sang the original song "Small Talk;"[24] and in 2017, she sang the original song "Breaking Open" and a cover of Ed Sheeran's "What Do I Know?," which was accompanied by her peers.[25]
Before heading to college, Sophia released her first collection of original music, entitled Senior Confessions (2017), to SoundCloud.[26] The album contains 12 tracks that she always wanted to release in high school and never did, including the 3 from Coffee House.[27] It has received over 275 plays.[28]
2018-present: Sophia Dove
In May of 2019, Sophia changed her social media handles to announce her new stage name and the release date for her first single.[29] "Summer Lover" was published to major streaming services such as Apple Music, Spotify, and Google Play at the end of the month.[30] Her next single, "His & Hers," was released to streaming services in June 2019,[31] and her third single, "DTW," was released in August.[32] She has received over 300 streams across all platforms.[33]
