Sophie Handford (born November 2000) is a New Zealand climate activist and politician who has served on the Kāpiti Coast District Council since 2019.
Early life[edit]
Handford was born in November 2000[1] and grew up in Paekākāriki. She attended Kapiti College, at which she was head girl and a student representative on the board of trustees.[2]
Political career and activism[edit]
In 2019, Handford helped organize and lead the School Strike for Climate in New Zealand, was selected by Kris Faafoi to represent the Mana electorate in the 2019 New Zealand Youth Parliament, and was elected to the Kāpiti Coast District Council in the Paekākāriki-Raumati Ward. At the age of 18, she was one of the youngest ever councillors elected in New Zealand.[3] She was then jointly named Wellingtonian of the Year, sharing the honour with Muslim leader Tahir Nawaz.[4]
Handford worked for the campaign of Terisa Ngobi in the 2020 New Zealand general election,[5] and has a part-time job in Ngobi's electorate office.[6]
