Carl Smith (activist)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Carl Smith (born c. 2001/2002)[1] is an American climate activist from Akiak, Alaska and a member of the indigenous Yupiaq tribe.[2][3][4][5]

Climate activism[edit]

Carl Smith had experienced the negative effects of global warming on his home and his community.[2][6][7] He reported that fish in the local river died due the heat[7] and believes that members of the Yupiaq tribe will not be able to continue their traditions of living off the land as a result of global warming,[2][6] including their customs of hunting caribou and collecting cloudberries and salmonberries.[2][8]

Smith is one of sixteen children including Greta Thunberg and Alexandria Villaseñor who filed a complaint with the United Nations on September 23, 2019 asserting that five of the world's major economies, namely Germany, France, Brazil, Argentina and Turkey, violated their human rights by not taking appropriate action to prevent the climate crisis, as they have failed to meet their respective emission reduction targets to which they committed in their Paris Agreement pledges.[5][9][10][11]

In December 2019, Smith participated in a panel discussion focusing on youth activism at the Headquarters of the United Nations for Human Rights Day.[2]
