Soren Marcus Kaplan (born November 27, 1968) is an American innovation expert,[1][2] author, professor, entrepreneur, consultant and keynote speaker. He is an Affiliated Professor at the Center for Effective Organizations at the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business, founder of the consulting firm InnovationPoint[3][4] and co-founder of the collaboration software company upBOARD. He is a columnist for the Innovate column of Inc. Magazine[5], regularly contributes to Fast Company Magazine[6] and writes about innovation for Harvard Business Review.[7] He is also a regularly sought out expert on the topic of innovation for publications like VICE.[8][not in citation given]
Early life and career
Kaplan was born and raised in Northern California. He attended public schools in Walnut Creek, California and graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles.
In 1992, Kaplan began working as a consultant for IdeaScope Associates, one of the first innovation consulting firms in California. Some of his early work on strategic innovation was published in the Journal of Creativity & Innovation Management under the title of "Harnessing the Power of Strategic Innovation".[9]
In 1996, Kaplan became manager of Business Innovation & Technology Solutions at HP, where he worked globally to lead strategy, product and service innovation, and transformational change within the organisation.
In 2001, Kaplan co-founded iCohere, Inc. with his father Pascal.[10] iCohere, Inc. became one of the world's first online learning and collaboration platforms, and grew into a leader in the collaboration software space.[11]
Innovation focus
In 2012, Kaplan published Leapfrogging: Harness the Power of Surprise for Business Breakthroughs, outlining his observations on why the power of surprise is so important for innovation.[12] He has since published his second book on innovation titled The Invisible Advantage: How to Create a Culture of Innovation (2017)[13] which was critically acclaimed on the Huffington Post.[14]
Kaplan regularly appears in the media through his contributions to has been listed as a thought leader by the influential innovation blog Innovation Excellence "Top 40 Innovation Bloggers of 2017."[15] Kaplan has also been referenced as an expert in innovation in The International Handbook on Innovation by Larisa V. Shavinina[16] and has been recognised by Thinkers50 as one of the world’s most influential experts with the potential to make lasting contributions to management theory and practice.[17] He has also appeared as a speaker at TEDx Bay Area.[18]
