From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Mike Ananny is a Canadian scholar, journalist and designer focusing on the fields of technology, media, and ethics. He is an associate professor of communication and journalism at USC Annenberg, as well as a faculty affiliate in USC's Science, Technology, and Society Initiative and a fellow with Columbia University's Tow Center for Digital Journalism.

Career[edit]

Ananny holds a PhD from Stanford University’s Department of Communication. He was a founding member of the research staff at Media Lab Europe, a research institute based in Dublin, Ireland. He has written numerous articles on the social implications of technology and new media, and has been published in the International Journal of Communication, Critical Studies in Media Communication, and the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication.

In 2018, Ananny released his first book, Networked Press Freedom: Creating Infrastructures for the Public Right to Hear. The book explores the concept of freedom of the press in the context of today's technological systems. Ananny reframes freedom of the press in terms of the public right to hear rather than an individual journalist's right to publish, and investigates ways societal, political, and technological infrastructure can be established to maintain that right.[1]

In addition to writing, Ananny has worked as a designer in new media technology, and has acted as a consultant to LEGO, Mattel and Nortel Networks. Some of his designs includes digital toys for children's language acquisition as well as interactive public art installations in Dublin, Northern Ireland and Amsterdam that make use of SMS text messaging.
