Search Sosui Ichikawa on Amazon.Sosui Ichikawa (市川 素水 Ichikawa Sosui, August 29, 1924 – March 7, 2005), was a master of Goju-ryu Karate-do.[1] He was the 4th Sōke of the Zen Nihon Goju-ryu Karate-do Renmei (全日本剛柔流空手道連盟) and founder of the Sosuikan (素水館) in 1952 in Ueno, Tokyo. In addition, he was also appointed to be an honorary board member of the Zen Nihon Karate-dō Renmei (全日本空手道連盟) in 1956.[2]
Sosui Ichikawa was a senior student of Kanki Izumigawa (泉川 寛喜 Izumigawa Kanki, April 16, 1908 – November 1, 1969) Kanki Izumigawa was a top student of Seiko Higa (比嘉 世幸, Higa Sekō, November 8, 1898 – April 16, 1966), who trained directly with Naha-te master Kanryo Higashionna (東恩納 寛量, Higashionna Kanryō, March 10, 1853 – October 1915) and Goju-ryu Karate-do founder Chojun Miyagi (宮城 長順, Miyagi Chōjun, April 25, 1888 – October 8, 1953).
Sosui Ichikawa's first introduction to karate-do was during World War II while aboard a battleship in the Imperial Japanese Navy.[3] After the war, Ichikawa began training with Kanki Izumigawa at the Senbukan dojo in Kawasaki and became one of Izumigawa's most accomplished students who, before opening the Sosuikan, was designated Dojo-cho of the Taito-ku branch of the Senbukan.[4].[5] Ichikawa ultimately received Izumigawa's Bubishi[6] which is considered proof of complete transmission of Goju-ryu and license to teach.
In 1983, Ichikawa was awarded the grade of 10th Dan / Hanshi[7] by Yuchoku Higa (比嘉 佑直 Higa Yuchoku,1910 – 1994) who at the time was the president of the Okinawa Karate-do Federation.
