The Sota case, also known as the "Sota murder", refers to the killing of a dog, on 20 December 2018,[1] at the Gran Vía Hotel in Barcelona, Spain,[2] and ensued accusations against government officials.[3] Internet users linked Case Manchinha, a dog killed by security guards,[3] and Sota, a dog killed by Barcelona police.[3] The debate had national and international repercussions.[4] The dog was yet another victim of abuse by police and security personnel,[5] and other incidents of police brutality have led to local, national and even global fallout from the sota case.[6]

In the hotel parking lot, a homeless boy who sells bracelets on the street spends the night with his dog.[8] Managers report being harassed by local authorities.[8] 10 to 12 police officers and five cars rushed to the scene to remove them.[9] A boy is assaulted.[9] The dog starts to howl in fear.[3] The officers shot the animal once in the skull.[10][7] The young man is trapped.[7]

The topic was among those that received the most comments on social networks. The keywords “Sota”, “justiceforSota”, “firearm”, “Murder” and “Police” appeared in more than 176,000 posts on Twitter, and other hashtags such as “#AssassinPolice” also appeared.[18]

Internet users and the media related the case to the case of Manchinha, a dog who was also killed on November 28, 2018 by security forces after being poisoned and beaten to death by them.[19]

On social media, the activist and artist gained popularity for an artwork that featured the victim's face and the phrase "Justice for Sota". The activist stated that his intention was to expose and combat police violence through his artwork.[2]
