Christian Legno (born 19 May 1976), known professionally as Soul Button, is a DJ and Berlin-based[1] record producer from Lecce, Italy[2]. He is best known for his emotive, thoughtful and uplifting live performances, thus finding his own genre, “Ethereal Techno”[3]. He’s also the founder and owner of 3 labels, Steyoyoke, Steyoyoke Black and Inner Symphony.
Early life[edit]
Legno's passion and love for electronic music started when he first listened to Kraftwerk. Growing up in a country where everyone only listened to Italian pop music, Christian stayed true to his taste in music. At the age of 16, he created his first beats with the drum machine, Roland R8, which was a gift from his father. He continued to develop his skills by sampling every noise he heard and eventually producing hard techno music. In 1995, he moved to Bologna to study electronic engineering while pursuing his dream for music. Christian started promoting underground techno alongside other techno ravers and launched the techno collective called ‘Tekno Mobil Squad’ (1997).
Career[edit]
From 2000 to 2012[edit]
He released his first vinyl ‘Look After Your Own Shit’ (2000) under the stage name ‘Leg-No’ which was a stepping stone towards his music career. The vinyl made a notable presence in several techno vinyl charts. From 2000 to 2006, Christian toured around Europe where he showcased his skills as a DJ to a wider audience. In 2006, he moved to London to grow his presence in the industry. However, facing financial struggles led him to stop making music for some time and he began working for a UK company producing beats for Hip Hop rappers and R&B vocalists. Christian's industry network quickly flourished as soon as he released his first Hip Hop album ‘Dope & Hope’(2007) in collaboration with artists such as Ghetto Priest, Spex Mc from Asian Dub Foundation, Cole Williams, Maya Azucena, Promoe and many others.
After deepening his knowledge and now having gained a vast array of experience in the music industry, it was only natural for the culmination of his own label. In 2012, he launched deep house label “Steyoyoke Recordings”. With this project now coming to light, Christian decided that it was also time to produce under a brand new artist name. He was driven to find a title that portrayed a strong concept and with this, Soul Button came to life.
2012 to 2014[edit]
Shadows’ was his first official EP, which he released in 2012. ‘Play Again’, followed in January 2013 and quickly climbed Beatport’s deep house chart; it remained in the TOP 10 for five weeks, thanks to the monumental tracks ‘The Keepers’ and ‘Come To Me’. ‘In My Stride' featuring acclaimed vocalist Stee Downes from Defected Records, was his follow-up release in June 2013. ‘In My Stride' instantly gained support and was charted multiple times by Hot Since 82. This was definitely a turning point for Soul Button as he received numerous requests for remixes, interviews, podcasts and events. ‘Swift Minds' feat Kara Square was released in June 2014 and was later remixed by Solee from Parquet Recordings. After the release ‘Chasing Thoughts’ together with Talul, Soul Button released his newest EP ‘Wraith’ in December 2015, featuring acclaimed American vocalist Terry Grant. The combination of his impeccable technical skills coupled with Terry Grant’s homely voice make for a killer combo. The EP climbed the Beatport chart, reaching #7 in the Deep House release chart. For months, the single was listed as the first track on the popular playlist of the mobile company ‘Orange’ (France) on Deezer. “Wraith” became the most successful melodic masterpiece track of his career.
2015-2017[edit]
From 2015 to 2017, Soul Button continued to tour worldwide to cities such as Los Angeles, Chicago, New York, Toronto, Montreal, Cairo, Beirut, Dubai, Sharm El Sheik, Florianopolis, Sao Paulo, Rio De Janeiro, Buenos Aires, to name a few. In May 2017, his new EP ‘Master Of My Fate’ was released on Steyoyoke. Featuring 4 tracks, his latest coup is an exercise in the beauty of dissonance. With ‘Master of my Fate’, he demonstrates that he’s not afraid to push his artistic boundaries and take his signature style to new and unexpected places. The EP was first in the Deep House Beatport chart for more than one month.
2018–present[edit]
In 2018, Soul Button turned another corner with his thrilling new EP titled ‘Reverie’. Composed of three vibrant tracks, it reached the #4 spot in the general Beatport chart, becoming one of the most significant tracks in his repertoire. In June 2018, Soul Button was invited by John Digweed for his Transitions 718 podcast. A few months later, he had the privilege to perform live at Playaskool, Burning Man 2018. ‘Metamorphosis’ EP was then released in July 2019, followed by his very first album ‘Phantom Existence’, released in December 2019. The album, which included 12 original tracks, was followed by a Remix Edition, released on April 2020. Having cemented himself firmly in the scene, Soul Button maintains focus on the continuous growth and development of his labels as well as his own personal career.[4]
