Soumya Guha

Soumya Guha is an Indian cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon based in Kolkata, West Bengal. He has held senior consultant positions at Desun Heart Institute and subsequently at BM Birla Heart Hospital (part of CK Birla Hospital), where he has been involved in the hospital's robotic assisted cardiac surgery programme.

In June 2026, BM Birla Heart Hospital announced the introduction of robotic-assisted cardiac surgery at the hospital, with Guha named as the hospital's robotic cardiac surgeon. At the hospital's public launch event, Guha said the technique involved smaller incisions, reduced pain, and could allow some patients to return to work within about a week, in contrast to conventional open-heart surgery.

Notable cases

While at Desun Hospital, Guha led a surgical team treating a patient whose valve replacement and pacemaker implant, performed at another hospital, had become complicated by an obstructed valve. The team carried out a redo sternotomy to replace the valve with a bio-prosthetic valve while preserving the patient's existing pacing system.

Guha was also reported to have led surgery removing a rare cardiac hydatid cyst - a parasite infection - from the heart of a 52 year old woman at BM Birla Heart Hospital, Kolkata, a condition described in coverage as occurring in a very small proportions of hydatid disease cases.
