SoundWave is a global assessment and consultancy firm based in Bristol, UK. They are popularly known for their communication assessments and frameworks[1], namely the Brilliance 3 Assessment, Self-Perception Assessment, and 360 Leadership assessment.

Soundwave suite of tools are dubbed as 'sociometric' tools [2]— being used to gather data to ascertain the quality of relationships between people based on their conversational skills.

History[edit]

The company was founded in 2012 by Kevin Eyre [3], a British consultant, author and researcher.

With an academic background in Political Theory, he went into the world of organisational development as a consultant, where he realised the correlation between shaping conversations and influencing people. From there, he came up with SoundWave and the notable '9 voices' model, which emphasises the ways of our conversational preferences and the impact of these verbal strategies on our relationships.

Framework[edit]

SoundWave believes that the way that people talk tend to be in three broad categories: Ask, Tell and Suggest.[4] These categories are then broken down into three further verbal strategies each, with each of them being used to define their own objectives.

Under the 'Ask' category, the three voices are

  • To Inquire: to ask open, exploratory questions in order to discover more
  • To Probe: to question more deeply, going beyond what’s given and teasing out what’s hidden
  • To Diagnose: to question logically in order to understand the cause, symptom or origin of something

Under the 'Suggest' category, the three voices are

  • To Articulate: to describe, summarise or clarify in a neutral, matter-of-fact way
  • To Advocate: to strongly express an opinion for or against something
  • To Advise: to offer a course of action or way of thinking based on experience or expertise

Under the 'Tell' category, the three voices are

  • To Challenge: to assert an opposing or different point of view to promote alternative thinking or action
  • To Correct: to correct someone by (re)-stating a requirement, standard, rule or boundary
  • To Critique: to evaluate objectively providing the positives and negatives in a situation or idea

Assessments[edit]

The SoundWave assessments are used by individuals, organisations, managers and SoundWave Accredited Coach Practitioners to resolve challenges in communication so that individuals and groups can work on cultivating a more productive and positive working environment.

Brilliance 3 Assessment[edit]

The SoundWave Brilliance 3 Assessment [5] is an introduction to one's preferred conversational style, and shows one how they can service their voices better to communicate their intended impact. It ranks one's top three preferred voices, and gives them an overview of the impact of their voices on how others think, feel, and behave.

Self-Perception Assessment[edit]

The SoundWave Self-Perception Assessment [6] is an extension of the Brilliance 3 Assessment, unlocking the full range of one's nine voices. Beyond the impact of one's voices, it identifies the strengths and gaps within their communication style, as well as listening preferences.

360 Assessment[edit]

The SoundWave 360 Assessment [7] is a feedback tool that shows the correlation between how you are talk and how you are heard by others around you. The report collects data from stakeholders feedback assessments to show you how effectively you are using your voices and how well others perceive your listening skills.
