Soundproof Aesthetic of Luxuriety is an assemblage by Lubo Kristek, made in 1976 in Landsberg am Lech. It belongs to his series of critical assemblages. Here, the artist refers to craving for luxury substitutes of real values and to the pitfalls of postmodern society.
In his critical assemblages, Kristek often puts found objects in unexpected context to reveal hidden principles, habits or addictions of current society. Soundproof Aesthetic of Luxuriety features mouse traps and a pearl rose that is attached to one of them. The rose is not live; it is only a luxury substitute. Those who blindly seek out the luxury substitutes don’t see the whole picture and don’t notice the big trap. The framing of the artwork is upholstered like a door in a psychiatric solitary room. After the trap snaps shut, no one can hear the cry for help in the soundproof space.
Another examples of Kristek’s critical assemblages are Barbed Wire of Christ (1983) and On the Landfill of Ages (1994).
