Soundproof Aesthetic of Luxuriety is an assemblage by Lubo Kristek, made in 1976 in Landsberg am Lech. It belongs to his series of critical assemblages.[1] Here, the artist refers to craving for luxury substitutes of real values and to the pitfalls of postmodern society.[2]
Description[edit]
In his critical assemblages, Kristek often puts found objects in unexpected context to reveal hidden principles, habits or addictions of current society. Soundproof Aesthetic of Luxuriety features mouse traps and a pearl rose that is attached to one of them. The rose is not live; it is only a luxury substitute. Those who blindly seek out the luxury substitutes don’t see the whole picture and don’t notice the big trap. The framing of the artwork is upholstered like a door in a psychiatric solitary room. After the trap snaps shut, no one can hear the cry for help in the soundproof space.[1]
The piece was first published in Vancouver in 1977.[3] It was in a monograph issued on the occasion of Kristek’s America exhibition tour.[4]
Another examples of Kristek’s critical assemblages are Barbed Wire of Christ (1983) and On the Landfill of Ages (1994).[1]
