Sparky Flames
Sparky Flames is the official mascot of Liberty University. Sparky represents the university's athletic teams, known as the Liberty Flames, and appears at sporting events, pep rallies, community functions, and other campus functions.
History
Liberty University adopted the eagle as its mascot in the 1970s, shortly after the school's founding as Lynchburg Baptist College in 1971. The eagle was chosen for its association with strength, freedom, and biblical imagery, see Isaiah 40:31: "But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint."

The mascot known as Sparky the Eagle was introduced in the 1980s to provide a recognizable character that could engage fans and promote school spirit. Over the years, Sparky's costume has undergone several redesigns to modernize its look while retaining the eagle motif.
Role and appearances
Sparky is a central figure at Liberty athletic contests, especially football and basketball games, where he leads cheers, performs skits, and interacts with fans. Beyond athletics, Sparky regularly appears at university ceremonies, alumni events, and community outreach programs in the Lynchburg area.[2]
The mascot is also featured in promotional campaigns for Liberty University and is a popular figure on social media, where the character helps represent the Liberty Flames brand.[1]
