Spellbound is an upcoming computer-animated musical fantasy film directed by Vicky Jenson. Its music was composed by Alan Menken,[1] who composed the music for various Disney films like The Little Mermaid (1989), Beauty and the Beast (1991), Aladdin (1992), and Pocahontas (1995). The film was produced by Skydance Animation and Skydance Animation Madrid.

Spellbound is scheduled to be released on November 11, 2022, by Apple TV+.[2][3]

The story is set in a world of magic where a young girl must break the spell that has split her kingdom in two.[4]

Development[edit]

On March 16, 2017, David Ellison revealed that Linda Woolverton is writing an animated movie for Skydance Animation.[6] On April 2, 2020, composer Alan Menken revealed that he is working alongside John Lasseter on a project for the studio,[7] which was later announced to be Spellbound.[1] The film will be directed by Vicky Jenson, from a screenplay by Lauren Hyne, Elizabeth Martin and Woolverton, with songs by Menken and longtime collaborator Glenn Slater.[4] Following Lasseter's, hiring then-chief of Paramount Animation, Mirielle Soria announced that Paramount will no longer work with Skydance Animation.[8] Apple Original Films would replace Paramount as a production company on the film, with Apple TV+ distributing.

Release[edit]

On March 16, 2017, the original release was intended to be in 2019.[6] Spellbound is scheduled to be released on November 11, 2022 by Apple TV+, in the United States.[4] On December 16, 2020, Apple TV+ entered talks to take over the distribution rights to the films Luck and Spellbound.[2][3]
