Sphaerodontes[1] is a dubious genus of extinct ichthyosaurs[2] from the Late Jurassic (Oxfordian)-aged Jagua Formation of Cuba. The genus was named by Torre and Cuervo (1939),[2] while the species epithet was added by Iturralde-Vinent & Norell (1996);[3] the type species is S. caroli. Nowadays, Sphaerodontes is considered a nomen dubium and the remains may have instead belonged to a ganoid fish similar to Eugnathides.[3]
The holotype consists of a set of now lost tooth moulds that was found in the Jagua Vieja Member[4] of the Jagua Formation by Carlos de la Torre before 1939.[3]
