Spice Money is an Indian FinTech company that provides B2B payment solutions. It was founded by Saket Agarwal in November 2000 and is based out of Noida, India.
Spice Money provides multiple services in a single online interface to its merchants and retail counters. These services are available in 7 Indian languages and offer online use-cases like money transfer/remittance, Aadhaar-based mini ATM, mobile recharges, utility bill payments BBPS, travel booking, MPOS, insurance, and buying/selling gold.
It is involved in micro-payment of services and remittances in real time, i.e., where the sender provides cash and the recipient receives money electronically in their bank account simultaneously. In June 2018, Spice Money reached a gross transaction value of $1 billion.[1]
History
The company was established (by the name of Cellebrum Technologies Limited) in 2000.
In 2007, the company changed its name from Cellebrum Technologies Ltd to Spice Digital.Spice Digital.[2]
It started as a business services portal for prepaid mobile and DTH recharge, postpaid mobile, and bill payments in 2013.
By April 2015, Spice Digital received a semi-closed PPI - pre-paid payment wallet license from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)[3][4]
In mid-2017, they received principal approval from RBI to operate under Bharat Bill Payment System [5] and a partnership with UIDAI[6] for Aadhaar Enabled Payment System[7]
In late 2017, Spice Digital was sub-divided into two business units under its legal ownership. Spice Money’s business operations are financial services, and Digi Spice’s business operations are domestic, international VAS, and m-government services.
