Spider-Man: A Night of Carnage is a 2018 Spider-Man fan film.[1] [2] [3] [4]

Plot[edit]

Venom once again attacks Spider-Man. Fully prepared with a new device that emits supersonic waves for fighting against symbiotes, Venom is easily defeated. Before being beaten, however, Venom damages the red and blue outfit, prompting Spider-Man to get another costume. Soon afterwards, serial killer Cletus Kasady escapes from prison.

While being chased by Spider-Woman, Kasady steps in the offspring of the Venom symbiote left behind from the fight against Spider-Man, becoming Carnage!  Spider-Woman escapes from the clutches of Carnage and finds Spider-Man, who now knows he must find Venom to find out the location of this new, murderous and more powerful symbiote enemy. Spider-Man finds out Venom is still weak from the previous fight, leaving it up to Spider-Man to take on Carnage without the help of Venom, while Carnage kills another victim. Spider-Man brings his anti-symbiote device but Carnage knocks it away from him and easily overpowers him. Spider-Woman arrives once again, just in time to help defeat Carnage.

Reception[edit]

Spider-Man: A Night of Carnage received mostly positive reviews on IMdB, ranking at time of writing, 8.4 / 10. This would rank it higher than actual Spider-Man blockbuster films, including The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) which ranked as 6.9 / 10 and The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (2014), which was ranked as 6.6 / 10.

The short film also received recognition as a "Top 10 Spider-Man fan film on YouTube".

The fan film was chosen for Official Selection for viewing at the Tarzana Comic Con and Film Festival 2022.

Cinematic Universe continuity[edit]

The film is the third in a line of Spider-Man fan films by YouTuber FireKracker44. The first film was Spider-Man: Three For All (2011), which featured Lizard and Punisher. The second film was Spider-Man: Forming the Foundation (2014), and featured Ben Grimm / The Thing, Electro and Mr. Fantastic. Because YouTube is home to countless Spider-Man fan films, there were ideas to separate this cinematic universe from others. For instance, all three of these films contain one major villain, while featuring another hero.

Spider-Man Three For All included Lizard as the main villain, with Punisher as the featured hero. Spider-Man: Forming the Foundation had Electro as the main villain (with Lizard returning as a minor villain) and highlighted The Thing - as well as Reed Richards as the featured heroes. Spider-Man: A Night of Carnage had Carnage as the main villain (and Venom as a minor villain) and featured Spider-Woman as the highlighted hero.

While there wasn't a linear storyline that carried itself over from one film to the next, there were minor points that did find themselves in multiple films. For example, Lizard went from the main villain in Spider-Man: Three For All to being in a brief scene in the second installment, Spider-Man: Forming the Foundation (2014), and the Future Foundation costume carried over from the second installment (Spider-Man: Forming the Foundation) to the third (Spider-Man: A Night of Carnage) - albeit, a different, more sleek version of the design. While Venom is not established in any film prior to his appearance in the third film, it is implied they had encountered each other off screen in between films.

Connections to other films[edit]

A Venom fan film created by a different YouTuber can be viewed as a prequel, even though it is not officially in the same cinematic universe. It can be viewed as an unofficial connection before Spider-Man: A Night of Carnage. In this fan film, Spider-Man seeks help from the X-Men as they help aid him with a solution for the black suit. The suit has a mind of its own as it takes over the body of Eddie Brock and becomes Venom. Heavily inspired by the 90's Spider-Man animated series.

A Hulk fan film, IncREDible Hulk: Menace of the Red Hulk] (2019) is considered to be in the same cinematic universe, though no characters have crossed over between the two films. It came out - and takes place - roughly a year later. This Hulk fan film's storyline is that SHIELD's supply of Hulk's blood is stolen from General Ross. Professor Hulk is recruited to regain the blood and stop the General, who is now the Red Hulk!

Future & short skits[edit]

There were several considerations for future film spinoffs or sequels.

At one point, there was heavy consideration for a fourth installment with the Hobgoblin as the main villain, and Silk as the featured hero. A similar idea was consideration for a short Silk film with Cindy Moon as the main character - but this differed in the first idea in that it would only feature Spider-Man as more of a "passing of the torch" type of role, putting Silk as the main hero and Spider-Man as the highlighted side hero. This script included Shocker as the villain, with potentially Hobgoblin or Electro being involved as well. Another Spider-verse film under heavy consideration was the spinoff from the Jessica Drew Spider-Woman which debuted in this film. This film would be a smaller capacity such as a 1-3 minute video - which included a tweaked origin and a fight against either Shocker or Electro. However, over time, the creator of these films decided Spider-Man: A Night of Carnage may not be topped as far as recognition for film festivals and positive ratings on IMdB. While a fourth film is still up in the air, smaller and shorter videos have been made, in the form of skits, including the following videos:

  • Spider-Man vs Shocker (2020) - using audio from the PS4 Spider-Man game, somewhat of a reenactment of the bank fight with Shocker.
  • Spider-Man: Along Came a Joker (2021) - a short skit where Spider-Man meets and "fights" Joker.
  • Real Spider-Man REACTS to Spider-Man PS4 game (2022) - skit reviewing the Spider-Man PS4 game.
