Edward "Ned" Leeds is a fictional character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film franchise, appearing as a supporting character to Peter Parker / Spider-Man. He is portrayed by Jacob Batalon and is based on the character of the same name from Marvel Comics, though the films portray him as an amalgamation of Harry Osborn and Ganke Lee. Ned is Peter's best friend and is the first non-superhero to discover his secret identity.

Development and portrayal[edit]

Fictional biography[edit]

Discovering his best friend is Spider-Man[edit]

Ned was a student at Midtown School of Science and Technology and a member its Academic Decathlon Team. He befriended Peter Parker and the two became best friends. In 2016, he discovered that Peter was the superhero, Spider-Man, with him offering his help, as the guy-in-the-chair informant. When Ned told to Liz Toomes that Peter knows Spider-Man, she invited them to her party, but Peter didn't show up due to Adrian Toomes gang causing problems in the city. Later, he and Peter examined a power core of an alien technology gun, used by the gang. Two members of it came to their school to find it, and Peter successfully bugged them, tracing their moves, to find their boss, the Vulture. The two criminals stopped in Maryland, close to where the Academic Decathlon would take place, in Washington, D.C.. He disabled the Peter's suit training protocol, and Peter went after the criminals, with him trusting Ned to keep safe the core. Peter ended up in a Department of Damage Control storage unit, missing the finals of the Decathlon. Ned and his victorious team went to the Washington Monument, where the core exploded in his backpack, with the elevator almost falling, only to be saved by Peter. Returning back to school, he prepares for the Homecoming dance. During the event, he noticed that his friend was missing, and went to find him getting beaten up by Herman Schultz / Shocker. Ned quickly intervened and distracted the Shocker, giving time to Peter to web him against a bus. Upon recovering, Peter revealed to Ned that Vulture is in fact, Liz Toomes' father. As Peter went after Vulture, Ned contacted Happy Hogan to inform him what was going on. After Peter stopped Toomes from stealing Avengers weapons, they joined the Decathlon team to discuss their future. Sometime later, he was interviewed by Betty Brant, with the objective of finding if he knew Spider-Man's identity, something he denied.

Victim to the Snap[edit]

In 2018, the Children of Thanos invaded New York City. Ned and his classmates were in a school bus at that time for a trip, and when they saw their ship, Peter asked him to cause distraction, so that he could go and fight them, something that Ned did. Later that day, The Avengers weren't able to stop Thanos from collecting all six Infinity Stones, and snapped his fingers, causing "the Snap" event, killing fifty percent of all living creatures. One of them was Ned too.

In 2023, The Avengers managed to reverse Thanos' action, causing the Blip, which brought everyone back. After the battle between the superheroes and Thanos, Ned reunited with Peter in their school.

School vacation[edit]

In 2024, his school organizated a trip to Europe, which he and Peter joined. In the airplane to Europe, Ned tried to help his friend sit next to MJ, who had feelings for her, but the plane was unsuccessful, with him sitting next to Betty Brant, who eventually become a couple. Their first stop was Venice, Italy, where they were attacked by Hydro-Man, and met Quentin Beck / Mysterio, who defeted the manster. Later that night, Ned went to Peter's room to talk, but he was tranqed in the neck by Nick Fury, who was there to recruit Peter. In the morning, Peter explained to him what happened, and learnt that their trip's destination was changed to Prague, Czechia. In their night in Prague, Ned and Betty went to a Ferris wheel, but there the Molten Man attacked, but were saved by Peter and Mysterio. When Ned went to discuss what happened with Peter, he discovered that MJ that Peter was Spider-Man. Then, he learnt that Mysterio was actually the one behind the monsters. The school final destination was London, United Kingdom where Mysterio attacked to kill Ned, Betty, and MJ. Happy Hogan went and saved them from some drones, and after the battle, Ned announced to his friend that Betty and he broke up. After their return to New York City, Mysterio revealed Peter's identity to the world.

Multiversal crisis[edit]

After Mysterio's action, Ned was taken by the Department of Damage Control, where he confessed he helped Peter in his actions as Spider-Man, but was released. In October, he returned to school where crowds of protestors were there. In November, Ned, Peter, and MJ met to know if they got accepted to MIT. To their surprise, they were rejected, because they were friends of Peter. His friend felt terrible for that, and went to Stephen Strange, wanting to cast a spell to make everyone forget he's Spider-Man, but the spell failed, bringing people who knew he was Spider-Man from other universes. Strange brought Ned and MJ to the Sanctum Sanctorum, where they were tasked with Peter to find these villains. Ned met Otto Octavius / Doctor Octapus and Dr. Curt Connors / Lizard, who were already captured. They found first Max Dillon / Electro and Flint Marko / Sandman who Peter transported to the dungeon. Later, Peter brought Norman Osborn / Green Goblin. Peter and Strange clashed over the fate of the villains, as if they sent them back to their universes, they would die. Peter won, and took Strange's magic Sling Ring, and gave it to Ned. Peter took the villains to Happy's floor, to fix them, but escaped, with Osborn killing Aunt May. Meanwhile, Ned and MJ wanted to find where Peter was after the incident, but Ned, using the Sling Ring, accidentally brought an older Peter Parker / Spider-Man, and a middle-aged Peter Parker / Spider-Man. Together, they went to Peter and comforted him about what happened, and went to his school to make cures about the villains. Afterwards, they went to the Statue of Liberty, to fight them, and were victorious, but other multiversal villains started to break Ned's universe. Peter asked Strange to arise from everyone's memories, of him, with as a result Ned forgetting his friend. In December, Ned and MJ were admitted to MIT. Peter went to both to reveal who he was, but didn't to protect them.
