SPIRE Institute & Academy is a preparatory boarding school and sports training destination in Geneva, Ohio, United States.[1][2]

History[edit]

SPIRE Institute and Academy first opened in 2009 as the GaREAT Sports Complex. At this time there was one building featured a synthetic turf field.[3]

On February 23, 2013, SPIRE was declared an Olympic and Paralympic training site by Alicia McConnell, director of training sites and community partnerships for the U.S. Olympic Committee.[4][5][6]

In February 2014, SPIRE became the designated training site for USA Wrestling, the United States Olympic team.[7][8]

In January 2020, SPIRE was sold to Axxella, a company affiliated with Blue Ocean Realty.[9][10][11]

Programs[edit]

Basketball[edit]

Coached by Gravelle Craig, the basketball program is open to high school, gap year, and postgraduate students. Its basketball alumni include LaMelo Ball[12][13] and Robert Bobroczkyi.[14]

The campus includes 5 hardwood basketball courts, including a Cleveland Cavs court as well as 25,000 sq. ft. Performance Training Center to help with physical, mental, and nutrition training.

Lacrosse[edit]

Coached by Leland Rogers, SPIRE’s lacrosse academy is offered to male high school, gap year, and postgraduate athletes.[15][16]

Included on the campus are 2 indoor turf fields as well as an outdoor turf field that features lights and stadium seating. Up to 6 more outdoor turf fields are being planned for on the campus.[17][18]

Swimming[edit]

SPIRE Institute is an Official FINA Training Centre, one of three in the world.[19][20] The swimming academy is offered to high school, gap year and postgraduate athletes.

In February 2020, 12-time olympic medalist Ryan Lochte signed on as an international swimming ambassador for the camps, events and programs at SPIRE Institute and Academy.[21]

With input from USA Swimming, two Mythra pools with 10 lanes of a 50-meter racing course that can be converted to 25-yard or 25-meter courses with pace clocks and scoreboard can be found on campus.[22] Underwater video equipment is present for swim power and stroke analysis as well as a 25,000 sq. ft. Performance Training Center.[23]

Wrestling[edit]

SPIRE Director of Wrestling, Olympian, and World Champion Kenny Monday focuses on skill development, training for different techniques, and the opportunity for live wrestling.[24][25]

Track and Field[edit]

The track and field academy is offered to high school, gap year and post graduate athletes. The facility has hosted the Big Ten Conference for over six years in a row and was set to hold the 2020 conference.[26]

In April 2020, it was announced that Timothy Mack would be joining SPIRE as their field training and development director. Prior to joining SPIRE, Tim Mack won many awards including an Athletics at the 2004 Summer Olympics – Men's 100 metres gold medal while setting a new pole vaulting record of 5.95 meters and joined the "6 meters club" by finishing first at the 2nd IAAF World Athletics Final.[27][28][29]

On campus is an outdoor 9 lane, 400-meter polyurethane international track, 4 long jump pits, 8 high jump positions, 4 pole vault boxes, and an adjacent Throws Stadium. The indoor complex features an 8 lane, 300-meter Beynon track, a separate field area with 2 high jumps, 2 long jumps, 2 pole vault pits, and portable weight throw cages.

Notable alumni and athletes[edit]

Since opening in 2009, SPIRE Institute and Academy has trained hundreds of Olympic and professional athletes, including those in the NBA, such as.LaMelo Ball, Ryan Lochte, and Katerina Stefanidi.[30][31][32]
