Spotahome is an online rental platform specializing in mid to long term housing, founded in 2014 in Madrid, Spain.
History
Spotahome was founded on March 5, 2014, by four co-founders Alejandro Artacho (Spain), Bruno Bianchi (Argentina/Italy), Hugo Monteiro (Portugal), and Bryan McEire (Costa Rica).[1] The idea originated from their personal experiences with the challenges of renting accommodation abroad and aimed to simplify the process through the use of technology. The platform received its first rental booking within a few hours of launching.[2][3]
Spotahome over €100 million in funding from investors such as Passion Capital, Seaya Ventures, Kleiner Perkins, and 14W. It became the first Spanish startup to receive investment from major Silicon Valley venture capital firms.[4] [5][6]
In 2018, Spotahome acquired Erasmusu, an online community for international students founded in Murcia, Spain. The acquisition, following Spotahome’s €13.6 million Series A funding round, led to the creation of the Spotahome Group.[7][8][9]
Initially based in Madrid, Spotahome relocated its headquarters to London in 2019, reflecting its objective of expanding its global presence.[10] By 2021, the company was operating in 28 countries, managing over 45,000 properties, and achieved profitability for the first time since its founding.[11]
In 2022, Spotahome raised debt from the specialized fund Claret Capital Partners, which has also backed local companies such as Jobandtalent and Playtomic with capital and venture debt.[12]
In April 2025, the company completed a strategic financing round of €5 million, which involved the incorporation of new investors and adjustments to the board of directors, including the addition of Sergio Furio (Actyus).[6][13]
Recognition
Spotahome received the top award at South Summit 2016, a leading startup competition in Southern Europe, in recognition of its innovation in the property technology (proptech) sector.[14][8] The company is also a member of the European Tech Alliance and the Asociación Española de Startups.[15]
