Sreejith Panickar is a political analyst,[1][2] television news debater,[3] researcher,[4][5][6][7] writer, and a social critic from Kerala. He gives opinions on political issues and government policies on national and regional television.[8][9]
Researcher
Panickar is the founder-member of Mission Netaji, an Indian not-for-profit organization that conducts research on the disappearance of Subhas Chandra Bose.[10][11][12] In 2015, Panickar accessed the particulars of 36 of the 41 secret PMO files on Netaji, using RTI Act.[13] These files contained information on Netaji's family, the funeral of his wife Emilie Schenkl, the Bharat Ratna controversy, the disposal of INA properties, the transfer of Bose's alleged ashes to India, and the construction of a Bose memorial in New Delhi.[13] The Indian government later declassified these files after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Bose's family members and researchers, including Panickar.[14]
Political analyst
Panickar's socio-political views frequently appear as news stories in leading media outlets.[15][16][17][18][19][20][21][22] His debates on the citizenship amendment act, farm acts, the Sabarimala issue, and other topics have gained significant—though mixed and sometimes negative—popularity on Malayalam television and public forums.[23][24][25][26]
In August 2020, Panickar boycotted a Media One TV debate because the channel wished to categorize him as a right-wing analyst.[27] Panickar himself announced this on a Facebook live stream, stating that he would not allow a TV channel's editorial board to restrict his personal freedom.[28] He also criticized the channel's inconsistency in applying political labels to all its analysts.[29]
Panicker has faced widespread criticism for insensitive comments made on Facebook. During the second COVID-19 wave in India, he made inappropriate jokes about sexual assault in the context of COVID-19 volunteers transporting a patient by bicycle during an emergency. He has also posted misogynistic and derogatory content on his Facebook page, responding to comments in an uncivil manner.[30][31] He also sparked controversy with a Facebook post containing communal slurs regarding the marriage of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's daughter.
