- Comment I do NOT think the S. Ramakrishnan linked by Robert McClenon above is the same as the subject of this article. Different professions and birthdates. PianoDan (talk) 18:17, 26 January 2022 (UTC)

Srinivasan Ramakrishnan (also S. Ramakrishnan) (born 22 December 1956) [1] is an Indian condensed matter physicist working in experimental ultra-low temperature research. He is a Distinguished Professor at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR) and the current Director of the TIFR [2]. He is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences.
Biography
S. Ramakrishnan, born on 22 December 1956 in a small town called Kodumudi in Erode district in Tamil Nadu, did his B.Sc. degree in Applied Sciences from the PSG College of Technology at Coimbatore in 1977 and M.Sc. Physics in IIT Madras in 1979. He joined Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in 1979 [1], enrolled at the University of Mumbai for doctoral studies on superconductivity in transition metal compounds and obtained his Ph.D. in 1985. Since 1985 he is a member of faculty at the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research and is now a Distinguished Professor. He was the Dean of the Natural Sciences faculty from 2006 to 2010. He is currently serving as the Director of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research since October 2020. He was as an Honorary Professor at Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research from 2005 to 2010.
Research
S. Ramakrishnan’s main research interests are ultra-low temperature (ULT) physics and strongly correlated electron systems with an emphasis on superconductivity (conventional and unconventional), magnetism, charge density waves and heavy electron behaviour at low temperatures. Such a study required setting up of a complex low temperature laboratory. He also designed a state-of-the-art Adiabatic Nuclear Demagnetization Refrigerator [3]. His efforts in ULT led to the discovery of superconductivity in the lowest carrier density Bismuth at 0.53 mK and was published in Science 2017 [4][5]. The versatile experimental set-ups in his laboratory make it the only place in India where one can undertake studies related to the interplay of phase transitions down to μK temperatures. Temperature of the experiments in his laboratory range from 400 K to 40 μK. He has authored 250 publications in reputed International Journals spanning 3 decades of research work.
Awards and Honours
He is a recipient of the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel Research Award (bestowed by Alexander Humboldt Foundation) in November 2001, which was followed up in August 2012 and April 2015 [6] and N. S. Sathyamurthy award for young scientists (by Indian Physics Association) in 1990 [7]. He was also awarded the Geeta Udgaonkar Best thesis award (1987) by TIFR.
He was elected as a fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences in 2002.
He served as the vice-chair of IUPAP C5 commission (Low temperature Physics) from 2014 to 2017 [8]. He is on the advisory panels of the International Conference on Strongly Correlated Electron Systems (SCES), International Conferences on Low Temperature Physics and Magnetism (Triennial LT and ICM series), and chairs a Department of Science and Technology (DST, India) Committee for evaluating projects that involve high magnetic fields and low temperatures.
