St. Charles Place is the third studio album from singer-songwriter Hayden McNulty, released January 2021.

Background[edit]

This album comes after McNulty's demo EP Of Mania release in August 2020.[1] The EP consisted of 8 demo/bonus tracks, from 0:53 to 2:46 in length.[2]

Prior to the release of St. Charles Place, McNulty created a new Twitter account and engaged with fans and was openly transparent about his music and his previous MineCraft Awesome Parodys project.[3] On December 19th of 2020, McNulty originally announced on his Twitter a new "...compilation-type album on [January] 2nd and focusing on something more full and detailed down the road...", as McNulty "...[hasn't] come up with a cohesive theme for a new album…".[4] Three days later though, he tweeted he "...might be able to make something out of a few recent ideas to sort of tie everything together...".[5] St. Charles Place was released on January 11th, 2021.[6]

Unlike McNulty's previous studio album High School Film Festival, St. Charles Place received a minor promotion on McNulty's MineCraft Awesome Parodys YouTube channel through his community tab.[7]

More than a month after release, however, McNulty uploaded the full album to his MineCraft Awesome Parodys channel on February 27th.[8] While his only other previous "non-MCAP" upload, the music video for The Queen Is Dead (released July 2019), quickly gained traction and notched over 150,000 views in a week, the St. Charles Place album struggled and achieved a comparably significantly poorer 13,000 views in two weeks.[9][8]

Composition[edit]

St. Charles Place features a notable change in songwriting, structure, and instrumentation from his previous two albums. St. Charles Place has 5 tracks under 2:00 in runtime, and is observably influenced by modern indie-rock. It is also the first studio album released by McNulty to contain a distinct guitar solo (I Got Me Waffe (Parts 7 & 8), I Don't Wanna Love You Anymore) and a track under 1:00 (Roll For Initiative!). St. Charles Place also marks the studio album debut of "Beach Cops", his only released single at the time of release.

On McNulty's "Bandcamp.com" account, he discusses various songs, their inspiration, and their composition. On the track "Yrself", McNulty reveals he "wrote about people who tell other people to work on themselves without telling themselves to."[10] Concerning the track "I Got Me Waffe (Parts 7 & 8)", he says "this [sic] one is a lil tune about me being ashamed of how i [sic] spend my time. not [sic] wisely".[11] Writing about the title track, McNulty admits he "didnt [sic] like the lyrics in this one cause it feels to [sic] personal. ive [sic] been doing that ever since of mania and i [sic] feel like this song really closely brushes that ep. i [sic] love this melody tho [sic]."[12]

Recording[edit]

Recording of St. Charles Place took place in late 2020 and early 2021, with the exception of "Beach Cops", as it was recorded and released as a single back in June 2020. All songs were recorded and produced in McNulty's bedroom studio.

On the track "Sinking Ships", McNulty has stated that he "wrote this song originally and accidentally ripped off [The Gun Song] by [Car Seat Headrest] so I wrote it again and accidentally ripped off [Fling] by [Built To Spill].[13]

McNulty discussed the creation of St. Charles Place on his "Bandcamp.com" account. "Sometimes I feel like I should scrap my project and do something completely different. I've been feeling like this for the past year or so and its also the reason I made an album and 2 eps last year. Right now as im [sic] writing this im [sic] scared that this album is too short but just know that with time I will return with a large, full, big loud project that will blow everyones [sic] mind, but [right now] I got this so [sic]."[14]

Reception[edit]

The reception for the album was mixed, gaining an average rating of 2.8/5 on reviewing website "rateyourmusic.com", lower than McNulty's previous album, High School Film Festival, but still higher than his debut, Modern Muskokan Poet.[15][16][17] RateYourMusic reviewer Bobby Hummer noted that the album "...is a bit inconsistent at times but very well made," going on to praise McNulty's improvement in songwriting, praising "...the soul in your songs with the lyrics touching deep inside me."[18] Fellow reviewer Geoff Korsempa criticized the presence of tracks such as "Roll For Initiative!" and "partysong.wav", "...where they should've appeared on a future demo EP or some compilation, not on an official album release," but went on to say that "...most of the full-length songs (tracks 2:00 and up) are some of the strongest of his discography so far."[19]
